Hey there Beauty Geeks
I am a fully qualified male beauty therapist in Perth. I graduated top of my class with academic honors and found it extremely hard to find employment in the industry. I eventually found employment but only on a part time basis and I only have about 0.1% of the client tell as a lot of people aren’t comfortable with a male therapist
If there are any other male therapist out there that could give me some advice on how to be a success in the beauty industry. As a male therapist, could you please help shed some light on this matter, as I am at a loss?

I think that times are changing, but sadly here in the UK, female clients generally feel comfortable only with female therapists, yet male clients feel comfortable with both male and female therapists.
You will get a few male therapists come back on here and tell you that they have female clients but in the main and the majority, it's still is the case that women go to women and men go to men and women.
Have you thought about specialising in male client treatments? xx

Dont give up and get disheartened. My therapist is male and he is the best therapist I have ever had and I've been having treatments for around 19/20 years now. I've also recommended him to friends who now won't go anywhere else as he is so good. Someone will give you the chance you need, just keep plugging away. Good Luck xxx

Hi
Firstly well done on graduating with top honours, thats a great achievement!!!
It is a difficult one to answer because it is easy to say that women like other women to be therapists, which in general is true!
However....
People get on with people and its just sometimes a case of making a great impression with someone and showing them your personality and that you are an ok guy!
When I was a college I had a lady come for a treatment and she made it clear that she wasnt impressed with 'a man' doing it. I gave her the opportunity to change to one of the other students but she pulled a face and said ity was ok.
I felt completly on edge and she really made me nervous. But I thought no, I'll do this as well as I do any other time.
To cut a story short, I really worked at the treatment, explaining everything and giving her the best advice I could.
By the end of the treatment, it had completely turned around and she was over the moon with her treatment. From then on she requested only me for futher treatements.
The moral of my story is not to let it get you down, expect rejection but dont take it personally; work that bit harder and allow your personaity to shine through!
It may take longer to build up clients, but with determination you WILL get there in the end!
As Kim said above though, the male market for this is ever growing, have you considered the male market?
I know that alot of gay guys are looking for males therapists too!

Hi Fella
I think Kim is right - its just the way it is - in the main. I personally chose to conventrate my treatments for guys, and this has paid off very well for me, and the clients appreciate a male environment. However, as a result of this, I do also treat wives and girlfriends of a number of my male clients - I guess , through building up a good relationship with my male clients, they are confident in my services and trust my professionalism.
I dont know if you have a web presence at all, but this really is a must if you havent already done so. You could start slowly..working for a company part time, and also for yourself part time, until you buld up a good loyal client base. Just be confident with what you do, and make sure you have something to offer that your competitors currently don't - keep one step ahead, and give a damn good service, and you will find that clients come to you, and stay with you

I've been working in the industry for about 13 or 14 years now, and being male has never been an issue for me. Pretty much my entire client base is female and are between 26 and mid 70's. However, a lot of it comes down to how you present yourself and how you are as a person. I approach clients as though it were perfectly normal that a male should be doing their treatments and this tends to disipate any sense of tension. Mind you I've been doing it so long now that I don't advertise anymore and clients come on recommendation, so they are expecting a male!!

Totally Agree!
90% of my customers are straight. I concede me only delivering waxing is quite niche though :)
Best for 2011!

Can I just add that there is a BIG difference between a man doing facial, massage etc which is totally acceptable to most female clients. However, the majority of women still feel uncomfortable having a bikini wax done by a man and that's a fact.
Yes, there are some male therapists on here that have female clients as you've already seen. This is a tiny minority when you think how many therapists there are in the world.
I'm not saying it's right.........it's just a fact. x
I'm about to open up my treatment room (I specialise in waxing) to ladies. And as Kim says I really don't expect to be inundated with calls. So I'm taking the cheaper option on marketing.
My friends. I'm starting off with offering my friends some free waxings, they know me and are comfortable in coming to see me. And I want their feedback on how my waxing compares to their regular salons (better hopefully). And from their I hope they will tell their friends and colleagues.
As a male therapist getting female clients is bloody hard, but referral makes a big difference. I am also planning on having "open days" or even just hours. Invite potential clients in to come and meet me, have a look at the treatment room, maybe see a demo of a waxing.
I'm entering fairly uncharted territory, there are only a few who have gone before me in doing this.
Good luck! It's bloody hard for a man to make it work in a woman's world but once you crack through the opportunities are immense.

Now now... Ladies don't bother if the man waxing them is gay, right? :green:

I think you should do some research around the Perth area, there are some guys doing great hair and nails in Perth, maybe go in and see them.
Kim's advice is correct as far as women preferring women, but I only agree with that in the UK. (No offense, but UK girls are quite timid and conservative).
In Australia, women are far more broadminded and there are MANY successful beauticians, brow guys, waxing specialists, hairdressers and they are inundated with female clients.
Good luck, i'll have a chat with some of my ex Perth clients and try and find some details for you.

Hey All
First Thank you so much for all the advice words of wisdom and support, It is really nice to know that there are other male therapist's out there. (thanks to all the girls as well for all there input) I do agree with you guys that it is all about attitude and how you present your self and winning clients over. I have thought about specializing in male waxing but some how never thought that guys whether straight or gay would really be comfortable with a gay guy waxing them but it seems that I might be wrong will be doing some research it to the matter and keep you guys posted.:)
