The reputation system (or Karma as it is sometimes refereed to) is a system used here that allows you to Let a user know what you think of their post without cluttering the forums up with silly posts like 'OO yea!' or 'well said' or 'herehere' or 'm4n 4L1Ve U s0 r0k DuD3!'.
The reputation level of a user viewed by the bars in each of their posts and is based on the amount of reputation points they currently have. Holding your mouse over the bars will display their current standing.

There are 3 different colour of bars:
http://www.salongeek.com/images/reputation/reputation_pos.gif Green - Positive. The member has a positive level of reputation.
http://www.salongeek.com/images/reputation/reputation_off.gif Black - Disabled. The user has disabled their reputation points. In other words - they don't wanna play.
http://www.salongeek.com/images/reputation/reputation_neg.gif Red - Negative. This member has pissed off enough people that they are in the Red. Usually most members will disable when they get there or are about to go there so they are a rarity. The number of blips (and the saying that pops up when you hover your mouse over the blips) is relative to how many points they have.
January 2011 Edit: Rep bars are now mostly blue, ranging from light through to dark. It would be unlikely to see a red blip as only Moderators can give negative reps!
How do I see what my reputation is?
On your User Control Panel homepage, you can view what your current reputation level is and the last 5 remarks that have been left. To get to your UserCP, click Quick Links->User Control Panel (http://www.salongeek.com/usercp.php) (you must be logged in).
January 2011 Edit: Click on Settings in the top right. Also included now is a link to the user who repped you, so you can click and thank them!
If anyone has given you reputation points, you will see something like:
http://www.salongeek.com/gallery/files/1/rep2_thumb.jpg (http://www.salongeek.com/gallery/files/1/rep2.jpg)
The first column shows a green, red, or black blip. This represents the type of point adjustment made. Green is positive, Red is negative, and black means that the user did not qualify to leave reputation points (more on that later). - only Moderators can give negative reps now.The second column shows the post that the reputation allocation was referring to.
The third column is the date and time it was left.
The last column is for any comments that the user may have left you.
Most users will leave a comment and many will also put their name in the comment (its kind of common courtesy) however this is not a requirement by design.
How do I add/deduct from someones Reputation?
On each post (upper right corner), you will find a button that looks like: http://www.salongeek.com/images/element/buttons/reputation.gif. Clicking that will bring up a window whereby you can choose to 'pat a geek on the back' for making a great post, or let them know you think their post basically sucked. only Moderators can give negative reps now.
How is my Reputation level in the grand Scheme of things?
The easiest way to see how you are on par with the other X thousands of members, go to the Member List (Other->Member List) and click the Reputation column header. That sorts the list by reputation (wither ascending or descending. Ties are then sorted on username).
The system is set up to allow users to 'safely' disagree with someones post without having to feel like they will suddenly become a victim for it. Forcing the name of the user that adjusted the reputation points to be viewed would result in no one ever leaving negative points! That would turn the system into an ego stroking add on for the site and defeat the whole purpose. There are MANY safeguards to protect people from abusing the system and I check the system from time to time to ensure that it is not being abused (more on this later). No longer relevant as only Moderators can give negative reps.
Here are some more specifics on how the system works to prevent abuse (just so you are all a lil more au fait with it).
Reputation Power
All users start off with 10 reputation points when they register
All users start with a reputation altering power of 0 points (those users with 0 points can alter peoples reputation by 0. In the members Recent Reputation Received box, they will see a black blip http://www.salongeek.com/images/element/reputation/reputation_off.gif ).
After 30 posts made on the site, your reputation altering power increases to 1 point (Then your adjustments will be seen as Red http://www.salongeek.com/images/element/reputation_neg.gif or Blue http://www.salongeek.com/images/element/reputation/reputation_pos.gif blips).
For every year on the site, your reputation power increases by another point.
For every 1000 posts, your reputation power increases by another point.
For every 100 points of positive reputation you receive, your reputation power increases by one more point.Abuse prevention
A user may only use their reputation power up to 10 times in a 24 hour period.
A user must use their reputation power on at least 10 other people before they can use it on the same person again. That way, no one can get picked on.
Users may disable their reputation by unticking the 'Show My Reputation Level' box in their profile (Quick Links->Edit Options (http://www.thenailgeek.com/profile.php?do=editoptions)) Settings, Edit profile
I monitor the reputation system periodically and dish out negatives (-10 points) to people who appear to be giving negatives without any particular reason for it. I would encourage you to leave a comment behind with the reputation point to avoid any misinterpretation of your intentions."O golly willickers. I got a negative point and now I am going to start a thread bitching about it!" No longer relevant as only Moderators can give negative reps.
If I see a post bitching about getting a negative point, I will delete the thread and issue -10 negative points to the complainer. This rule has come about from the amazing amount of stupidity that takes place when someone actually gets a negative point. If you don't like it - disable your reputation.
If you feel unjust about a point and are getting several - drop me a PM and I will look into it. I will not look into every bleeding point you get - only if you suspect there may someone abusing the system (which as you can see is very hard to do). No longer relevant as only Moderators can give negative reps.
