View Full Version : Time spent on cuticle work
Hi, I was just wondering how much time you all spent on cuticle work for Shellac and Minx treatments, and if I am overdoing it.
I did my daughter and Mum again yesterday and it took me 25 minutes using cuticle away to sort their cuticles out. I do one hand at a time, use the pusher tool and then the small end of the curette. In the end, I was unsure if I was removing cuticle or dryed 'Cuticle Away'. Both have been done recently, but my daughters cuticles seem to grow quickly, and Mum's are dry, even with solar oil use.
I have watched Fingernailfixers video a few times and am wondering if I am just trying to do too much.

Hi
I dont do shellac or minx but do acrylic and gel overlays. We were taught to do dry prep, so no using cuticle away or other cuticle creams/gels etc. We just push back and remove as much as we can using our dual tools. If there is a lot of stuborn cuticle that isn't coming off we use cuticle nippers (not needed very often tbh) then we remove the shine.
Maybe you could try doing dry prep. I do tent to spend a lot of time on my prep because it is the main cause of problems (lifting) and I feel the time is well spent if the product then goes on as it should and lasts like it should.
Thank you. I have tried dry prep but it didn't look really tidy when I finished. Perhaps I will just try to speed up or have another go at dry prep.

Hi I only do a wet prep if one is necessary for these 2 treatments,if theres a lot of cuticle on the nail bed. I dont use the currette but make sure I have scraped it well (gently) with the spoon end af my cuticle pusher hth:)

i ALWAYS use cuticle away! its the only way i can guaranty that all the cuticle is gone! with dry prep it doesn't get it all and can some times scratch the nail plate!
I think cuticle away is soo easy to use an a brill product it does all the work for you! maybe if that client hasnt had them done for a while it may take abit loner but i think if it takes you 25mins then fine at least you know that you've done them correctly and if the client comes back and says that her minx has peeled off or Shellac has chipped or cracking round that cuticle area YOU know that you throughly did her cuticle so its nothing you've done wrong and you did very good PREP!
just but lots on and maybe leave it for 5 mins to soak in.
i normally put a blob on each finger then go back and spread it ALL over the nail plate not just near the cuticle, then go back to the begining and give then cuticles a little push then go back to the begining and then all the dead cuticle has lifted of the nail plate :) x
Yes, I was definately taught to use cuticle away, so I think that is what I will stick with and maybe I will speed up a little with more experience. Thank you :)

I always used to do wet prep, when I first started but now I decide if I need to or not especially on a re-shellac and regular clients prep can take me anywhere between 10 -25 mins depending on the state of the cuticles. So don't worry about how long just getting it all off the nail :) xx

I would have to agree, don't worry about the time so much, cause it is one of the most important steps to ensure good adhesion.
I spend a fair amount of time doing prep and I do wet prep every time, I feel this way, I know I'm getting all the cuticle off cause the natural glue the body produces to keep it stuck down, needs to be broken down in order for it to be removed thoroughly and this is why I do a wet prep.

I used cuticle away for the first time last week and i have to say wow.. it is a brill product. my other brand cuticle softner wasnt getting enough off the plate. Wonderful stuff.. :O) and my client noticed the difference straight away :O)..
I do think it is an amazing product......probably too good......lol. I did someone today who couldn't believe that everything I was taking off was cuticle, she though it was melting the nail plate.....

Hello
What is the best product to remove cuticle, Ive heard lots talking about "cuticle away" - who stocks this?
Also is it right that its best to use this procedure than actually cutting it away as this can cause the cuticle to regrow harder ?

Cuticle away is made by CND so is available from S2 or Ellisons.
This product helps to remove the cuticle from the nail plate that can interfere with a service. I think you might be talking about cutting the eponychium, which is a big no no.
This video from the fingernailfixer might help?
