View Full Version : Renting gone sour

I have been renting space in a nice salon where i get lots of business from the hairdressers and it works out well.

Ok there was the incident with the Naughty Junior (see previous post) but since then everthing has been ok (incidentally i was never reimbursed for the products).
I do the girls nails for free ( 3 girls have had extensions quite a few times now and a couple have had manicures) and in return get my hair done (i have had it done once about 6 weeks ago)

But I have noticed an atmosphere has developed and I have no idea why and to be quite honest it has upset me to the point where I want to walk away as I am very hurt.

During the week one of the girls asked me to do her some extensions as she was going out on the weekend. As I was doing them she asked if I was "going on saturday?". It transpires they were all going to town for a night out...no one asked me. I understand the owners were treating them, but i would have paid my way and I was rather hurt that I was not asked.

Then during the week, I had just finished a client and it was boiling hot so I asked if anyone wanted a drink as I was going to the shop.
I was told "oh no it's ok we have just been up the shops and got drinks for us"
I was really annoyed that no one could have the decency to ask me if I would like a drink...after all it was boiling hot weather and they got one for everyone apart from me...I would have paid for it...I was not asking for one for free!!!

I am always kind and polite to all of them...If I go to the wholesalers I always ask if anyone needs anything, I gave the owners sister a discount when she had her nails done for her wedding. I have not done anything to them and I now sense an atmosphere that smacks of them wanting to get rid of me.

Is it me just being sensitive? Should I just ignore it or have it out with owners and ask what is going on?
I work constantly and work hard, I dont have any friends in the area and thought it would have been nice to go out with the girls and insted i get a kick in the teeth.
I know there are no friends in business, but I am really hurt.

Ahhhh thats horrid....i would be upset too....unfortunately not everyone is as nice as you and some people just don't think. I would rise above it and not let them know that it had upset me. You could attempt to arrange a work get together at some point and if no one is intrested then i would think something was up. You sound lovely to me and i am sure would be a great work mate and friend to have....ignore them....they have no manners. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

i would be tempted to spk to the owners and say ... "is it me , am i being silly here but i am getting a vibe i have done something to upset you lot?" that should prompt her to either tell you or look flustered so you should be able to read the old body language a bit !!!!

It must be a horrible situation to be in peeps can be very thoughtless at times i wouldnt dream of sitting there slurping on a nice cold can of coke on a hot day without asking if anyone else wanted one fetching its just manners!

Try and clear it up sooner rather than later these things can EAT at you!

Good luck hun

HI

I totally agree, you really want to nip this in the bud. You could even approach one of the girls or as many as you can get and say " have i done something wrong?? cause i get the feeling i have??"

It could be that the junior has hmm embellished her side of the story to the other girls maybe??

I would definately approach the owners and ask them about it.

Dont let it go on or you will get even more unhappy.

Same here, I would nip this in the bud asap, before it gets out of hand. I would be inclinded to ask the girls, in a diplomatic way, if you have done anything to offend them. It may simply be that they think of you as not part of the salon team because you rent rather than employed by the owners. If you feel this would be to difficult to do then, as already suggested, approach the owner and have a quiet word in their ear.

You shouldn't feel pushed out, you have as much right to be there, if not more, as them. Woman can be really bitchy when they want to be, but dont let them trample on you feelings. You know your worth more than that. As for doing their nails free, I would also look at this. It seems your doing an awful lot for the girls with little in the way of payback. Even if its just a nominal chargeto cover the cost of your products. Don't feel bullied into doing them for free just to try and keep face. If you need to do that then their not worth being friends with in the first place.

When it comes to the crunch your there as a professional self employed person, to make money. You have to be successful, we all know the cost of learning nails and the products we use to do what we love. If they have a problem, stuff um! I would hazard a guess that the owner would rather keep a paying professional in their salon, who brings in customers.

Hope it all works out, DON'T WALK OUT, YOUR STRONGER THAN THAT!

Well I have slept on it, and decided I shall ask them straight out if there is a problem tommorrow...I can see me having to find new premises though, as I am 100% sure there is a problem. I think maybe they want to get someone else in now I have built up the trade and employ them so that they get the profits instead of renting to me.

This is really begining to get to me, I have worked so hard and now it is making me so miserable.

If there was nobody there doing nails before & you are self-employed then the clients are yours. If you leave make sure you tell your clients well in advance and take as many with you as you can & don't let them get their hands on your record cards. It does sound like they could be trying to get rid of you but don't let them bully you. I'd be looking for a new place anyway as it sounds like you are going to have plenty of problems with these people, even if this sorts itself out. When you speak to them, don't make any rash decisions or you could find yourself quitting with no place to go. If you aren't working long hours in the salon, maybe you could start a bit of mobile work after hours to keep some of the clients away from the salon & keep them with you.

Hi there

Head down bottom up.
Dont waste your time on the staff. They are paid to do a job.
Between them they will only try to confuse you.
Speak directly & calmly to the owners.
Ask if something has happened
NOT WHAT HAVE YOU DONE.
Mention that you can feel something isn't right......
Making you & your clients a little uncomfortable......

ALWAYS have a copy of you're clients numbers so you can notify them of any changes to your appointments - location etc..

Dont feel bad if you know you've done the right thing....
Some People are just naturally nasty........

I think you may be being a bit sensitive!! I've rented space above a hair salon for nearly two years (finished there on Saturday though! - long story!)and both of the above have happened to me. But they are younger than me and I really don't fancy going clubbing with them, and I've popped across the the shop and forgotten to ask them too.

Obviously I don't know the ins and outs of your life in the salon, but by being so sensitive and therefore being a bit cautious you may now be appearing a bit stand offish to them. (not saying you are, just trying to see it from the other side of the fence for you)

You're new to the salon and you're all sizing each other up and getting to know each other, this is quite normal. Just have a quiet word with someone in an informal way, just ask "am I being daft and over sensitive? I feel like I'm being left out all the time and I would really love to be part of the gang."

However, that said, you need to feel comfortable where you work. Clients can sniff out a bad atmosphere at 20 paces and that's unprofessional, so if you are really unhappy then maybe it would be better to move on.

Good luck in whatever you decide to do.

How did everything go today?

Every place that I have worked, from restaurants to odd jobs to my current full time job (at a printing company) there are always a group of bitties who want to make everyone else miserable.

Normally, they turn their evil eyes onto different people as often as I change the color of my toes...

I really wouldn't put much stock in this lasting very long. They'll get over it, you'll get over it, and the world will go on as happily as it was before.

Just keep your head up, a pep in your step and know that you can always vent to us!

Lots of hugs and pats on the back!

absolutly fab!

I have said nothing to them about the situation..I just went in was nice to everyone and got on with the job.

I shall just see how it goes, the girls who work there are fine, it is the owners whom I am getting bad vibes off, but they were okish today so I shall leave it till I have something more concrete to base my concerns on.

Thanks all for the advice!!

Hi hun, I used to get this all the time from the owner of the salon I rented space from. Thought it was me (yup I'm a sensitive soul too), but turns out she would blow hot and cold with anyone and anyone. So I am sure it is them and not you. Just mix with the other girls and enjoy working there.
