I have only been in the beauty business for a year. I worked in HR in the oil industry before this and it's like a whole new world to me.
I came straight from college/training and started on my own after reading some of the things that go on I'm so glad I did.
A lot of young girls would love to be beauticians and their parents put them off and now I'm understanding why.
Seems to me in the hair and beauty industry it is acceptable to have people work for nothing.
If my business ever comes to a end I think we can safely say I wouldn't be looking for a salon job. I used to big up the beauty industry but now I can honestly say I wouldn't encourage anyone to go into it unless they are starting up on their own.
you havent explained why hun?xlol.

Oh sorry! Lol! So far on here I've read people have to start 15 mins before they start getting paid, do a whole days work before they get a job etc. Just all new to me! Seems to be a industry that unless you are self employed/owner you can't make much money. Shame.

Trade tests and trial days are common place, the salon i work in begins appoontmemts a 9am therefore all staff are expeceted to be in the salon at 8.45. I worked at a salon previously were they opened at 9 and opened at 9. The clients were waiting outside, staff still had to take coats off, put bags away, turn everything on all while the poor client who was meant to be booked in at 9 was waiting.
Our 9am clients are greeted by a shop that is ready for them. Its all about professionalism xx

I worked somewhere where you had to be in 30mins before you were due to start. And finish up at the end of the day for no extra cost!! I also had to travel into London from Hertfordshire so it meant I would leave the house at the crack of dawn for a 9.30/10am start!
Needless to say, I was there a year and left!

I have worked in several other industries where you are expected to do trial days at be set up before you working day.
Yet another example of today's youth expecting to get it all for no effort

I had a boss that was truly awful...hence why I am also self employed now.
I think having an awful boss is what makes you strive for better in yourself. I find I am a better therapist for it. I strive for the best, not just mediocure, which my old boss did.
She was also highly unprofessional! Her actions/ways just make me want to continually better myself so I'm not like her!

I know what you mean. It was a bit of a culture shock for me after college.
I'm glad I stuck it out in terms of finding a job in the industry but yeah, tis abnormally difficult in comparison to other industries.
i agree now days you are better off on your own trying to make a business than salon work.its what suits your needs but i would advise any1 to give it agox
