Hi guys,
Sorry if this isn't in the right place but I'm new to salon geek!
I'm currently saving for the deposit on a course at the manchester school of make up. (24 weeks media hair and make up)
I need to save 2,000 and then I have 8,000 remaining. I am hoping to do this with a career development loan.
I have been informed by the school that this is how most students pay for their courses.
I was wondering if anyone on here as used a CDL loan to get started?
I realise, once qualified progress can be quite slow for the first couple of years and was wondering, if anyone else has used one of these, how easy they found the repayments?
Did you manage to pay it back on time?
Sorry for rambling and I hope I kind of make sense. Ha :)

Surely not, that really cannot be correct, can it?

Have you looked around at other options?

I'm always looking for courses but never seen one that expensive!

I know it's so expensive but I think it's because it's such a long course? Compared to others that are around three weeks long?
Is all aspects of media make up, including bridal, theatre, FX, eye brow shaping, eye lashes, air brush etc.
It also includes media hair, wig work, facial hair and male hair.
And it includes an 8 week pro tech hair dressing course.

I've worked out if I did all these separately with different schools, it'd cost me like three times more.

I have spent months researching schools, from Manchester to London and. Just can't find one like this! Ha.

Leeds city college do a media hair and makeup course that is one day a week for a year as do York college. Have you checked your local college? The course at Leeds seems to do all the things you've mentioned. Good luck xx

I live in a really rural area so the colleges around me don't offer a lot ha! Thanks anyway :)

May I ask what are you hoping to achieve after completing the course?
What field(s) do you wish to work in?
Do you want to be a jack of all trades or a specialist in a particular area?

Have you spoken to people who already work in these fields and found out what qualifications and experience they have?

Before spending such a large amount of money with a private college, I would recommend that you ask a lot more questions of the course providers. You need some guarantees about how employable this course will make you.

Also, sorry, but what the heck is a pro tech hair course? I'm intrigued.

Best of luck.

Such a long course? You could do a degree in mathematics or nursing for the same amount in Cardiff for 3 years!

I don't want to put a downer on your plans but I personally think that's a ridiculous amount of money to learn make up!

Just thought I'd answer regarding CDL. I was going to go down this route but unfortunately training provider wasn't on the CDL List! You apply to 1 of 2 banks co-op or barclays. If one refuses you, you can then apply to the other bank. Firstly, they will need proof that you can make up the remaining costs otherwise they won't lend you the remaining amount so send your bank statement to prove you have the money ready and waiting. As for repayments, they give you the duration of the course interest free where you don't have pay anything back. Once your course has finished, 6 weeks after they expect you to start making repayments and depending how long you picked, 3 or 5 years that will be your monthly repayment. It is exactly the same as a normal loan with strict repayment's, late payments fee although it has a lower apr than normal personal loans. It also states on the applications that you must start paying the loan back regardless if you have found a job in your chosen career. You have to ring direct gov to get the application packs.hths and good luck!

I currently offer makeup (was originally going to solely be a makeup artist but decided to train in other beauty treatments instead). I trained at the London School of Beauty and Makeup last year and the course was £1000. This was a foundation course and covered the basics. I really enjoyed it and after I received my certificate, I went on building my kit which has costed me alot of money. I have been testing with photographers ever since and I'm hoping to assist makeup artists with more experience than me.

Personally I wouldn't spend £10,000 on a makeup course unless I wanted to go into advance makeup like prosthetics or special FX. Even then I'm pretty sure you can find cheaper courses. If you're looking to work in fashion and editorial, I would find a course that was less expensive and after graduation, concentrate on building a portfolio. The industry doesn't take certificates into consideration (I would still get a recognised certificate for insurance though). Some of the top makeup artists in the world have never been to a makeup school. It's only your portfolio that is judged within this industry.

It's not a quick way to make money either. You need to have a solid portfolio before getting any paying work and that can take up to 2-3 years. Bridal makeup is where the money is right now so you could go into that whilst building your portfolio with photographers. I don't think you should take out a loan for this course. Please try and think about this carefully.

That amount is the deposit on a house!! I personally wouldn't spend that much on a course. Have you tried the Cassie Lomas Make Up Acadamy in Manchester?? Her courses are around £4000 which I still think is expensive but she takes her girls all over the UK helping her in TV and Photography Shoots. She is quite well known in the industry and I get the impression that if you study with her you are well on your way to getting a job once qualified xx

OMG, you'd be better off studying at AOFM in London and using that money for acommodation. AOFM give loads of after care, opportunities to work on fashion shoots, assisting working artists and all sorts. I would be really careful about parting with that much money. Do they give you any help afterwards to get you started?

Sorry not much help on the CDL, but I nearly fell off my chair when I saw how much you were saving up!:Scared:
