Ok' so am starting my own business. I am in the UK. I have a beauty salon at home with planning permission granted. I will be a sole trader only earning a small amount part-time (so won't be paying tax) as am also a mum.

Where do I start?...:o

Register self employed

Contact HMRC

what else... Get an accountant? register with my local authority? Apply for any special licence's/permits (ie electrolysis), what does "doing your books" mean - is it incomings/outgoings & anything else? Do I have to have a business bank account or not?

As you can tell im clueless on all this!

Want to get it right and so would appreciate those who have experience or knowledge of this

Feel free to give me a call or drop me a text/email.

We sell salon software, however I have had a salon in the past and am always happy to offer advice or guidance. No sales pitch I promise.

Get the "best small business accounts book" (yellow version) for non-vat registered small businesses. It's so easy!
When you do your tax return in April do it online. I didn't and now I'm having a few problems. I put my turnover in the profit box! Doh!
Anyway if I had done it online i could have amended it.
Keep all your receipts on everything you have spent setting up your business. You need to pay yourself back this first.
We have a place called "business enterprise" here and I went on a few courses with them. Book keeping, new business etc. They are free.
I do have a business account and my earnings go in there and then I transfer myself a wage each week.
Your appointment book will need to match your takings.
I have a home salon so any questions I will try and help. X

Ok so this might sound stupid but with COSSH, do you do that yourself or does somebody else have to come in and do that for you?

Do you have official sheets we need to use or do we make our own? And if i were to google....what exactly would I google for? Lol. Sorry for jumping on but I am doing all this right now myself!

HMRC do Webinars that you can be in on and even get to ask questions. I managed to catch just most of one today (my client ran over) and it was really helpful.

They include doing self assessment, being self employed and everything you need to understand.

Have a look on their website and register for the different Webinars available.

Also, HMRC have their own youtube channel.

I've been trying to work this out myself! lol, in my area we also have 'business enterprise' as Beautygirl1977 mentioned. I found out about them by going to my local jobcentre and asking for help and advice there. I'm attending a course on tues morning and at the end of it i'm getting assigned a coach. They help you with everything you need to have, like help you draw up a business plan etc. They also have information on funding if you need it and they help you apply for loans and grants you might need. If i learn anymore from the course on tuesday i'll let you know as i'm in the same situation as you at the moment!
If business enterprise isnt in your area, the business link website is quite handy and they can assign you an advisor too if you contact them.

Hope this helps and i havent waffled on too much lol
Good Luck x

You def don't need an accountant. especially to begin with. You can usually take a portion of rent (or mortgage) and all bills, relative to the rooms you use for work and the amount you use them. I got help from the tax office - they were really helpful and you didn't have to give all your details! Keep all receipts - you can claim petrol to and from the wholesalers, at about 45p per mile, and any other expenses. Good luck!

Thank you! I thought I might do the books but get my accountant to do end of year, copy her suggestions and do it myself next year. She also said about claiming mortgage, rooms etc etc

Hi, A quick question on this 'yellow book' which Ive bought

I have a few expenses which I paid for from my private account (as I hadn't set up my private/business bank account then), how is it best to record that in the book. I have listed them in the 'payments record column' but now it obviously wont tally up - should i be recording this somewhere else on the page also? if so where/how:?::o im getting a little frazzled with it all

I'm really sorry as I have absolutely no idea what the yellow book looks like as I have always done my own accounts (so maybe won't know how it's phrased). However any outgoings should be listed in your expenditure column. Any money that you put in (or receive in) to your business should be recorded as income and (the former) should be under the heading 'capital' .

Hope this helps

Thanks. I have put in the expenses column items i purchased (but was paid for from my personal bank account) so should I write something in the money coming in column to balance it??

You'll also need a PPL which allows you to play music, all equipement needs to be PAT tested as well as everything else people have listed. Insurance goes without saying...... Bloody the list is endless isn't it! :)

Thanks I have been given different advise regarding PPL, one man said I wouldn't need it as the salon is at home, but I have decided I was going to use royalty free music anyway.

Pat testing is something that is on my list! as well as:

permits or licences?? (electrolysis etc)
COSHH - how?
Other healthy & safety needed?
Envirinment agency regarding waste disposal (remember its a home salon)
Business rates (not needed as I have said the room will have residential use)
Pac testing
Capital Gains??
Accountant - done
Register HMRC - done
Insurance inc public liabilty, indemnity & house insurance - done
Planning permision - done

helllppp...............:Scared:

Thanks. I think the problem was I had put the expenses (paid from personal account by card) into the expenses 'paid by card' column so even though I had put income coming in as cash to cover this, the two were not balancing leaving the bank with a negative and the cash too high.

So think I will put the expenses I purchased under 'paid by cash' so it will balance and explain to my accountant when she does the end of year so when she cross reference's the invoices she'll understand why their card not cash invoices.

Hope this makes sense lol!! still waiting to be sent the new account details from the bank so I can start using it

Hi, I think it varies dependent on the local council. My council does not require me to have a license as I do not offer electrolysis or piercing.

Contact your local council and ask them what their requirements are x
