Whilst I'm qualified level 2 and obviously struggling for work, throughout the year I have been slowly collecting equipment to do treatments mobile.

I'm not expecting this to be a booming business, but I would just like to keep my hand in the skills I've learnt so far while I train in level 3. I'm going to be insured by the Guild and awaiting my certificate.

I would just like to know the exact rules around choosing a name for my service. I thought I had (finally) decided on something but seems there are many salons called this already - closest I found around 40-60 miles away.

Thanks for any help!

Also if anyone could offer any advice on coming up with a name I would be so grateful!

If it's not trademarked, you can use it.

Check here.

WebCHeck - Select and Access Company Information (http://wck2.companieshouse.gov.uk/07a3389d54916934849cd1b0305b8807/wcframe?name=accessCompanyInfo)

It's usually a courtesy (like you've done) to check if any local companies have the same name though- just to head off any future "unpleasantness".

And as you asked- I've just launched a service myself where people can choose a unique logo and brand-name "off the shelf" verve design (http://www.verveprint.co.uk/brandinabox.htm)

No worries :)

To be fair- the chances of coming up with a 100% unique name is pretty slim, so its usually (in my opinion) best to differentiate yourself with a striking "brand".

Generally I'd stick to something memorable, snappy and not too complicated. Look around the room you're in now- I'd bet most of the business names are one-word. Apple, Sony, Tesco, Prada, Nike, Adidas...Verve (lol) etc etc.

A business name is, essentially, a "sales-tool" to communicate as quickly as possible what you do and what you stand for- and then make sure you're remembered.
