Im just wondering if the general opinion for matting at the roots is down to aftercare.....
I wore extensions for years on and off and never find the matting a problem until right near the end just before removal. I always follow the aftercare and really look after them.
But some customers I find their hair is really matted and they say they have been following after are advice......
Is it more down to aftercare or bad fitting technique.......
I don't want to be doubting my fitting technique either that it I have to go over aftercare in more detail with my clients

I find everyone will get some matting at some point but find a lot of clients don't separate the bonds which can be a big cause and also bad aftercare which can cause the bonds to soften therefore causes hair to stick to them xx

As long as your sections are neat, you have no crossed hairs and there is equal tension throughout all then hairs in the section then it shouldn't be anything to do with fitting.
I find some clients don't separate daily like I tell them to but most do especially when I suggest doing it whilst they watch Eastenders or reading 50 shades of grey... after all, you only need one hand to hold a book!
Once they see and feel the difference of that little bit of care can give they will keep it up x
Try getting them to use a Tangle Teezer since I've used mine I never separate my bonds and never get any matting, however don't tell your customers not to separate their bonds when using their Tangle Teezer as they really won't bother then.

Hi.. besides advising the client to separate the bonds...I always carry out a 'root trim' at a maintenance appointment, I trim all the hair at the top of the bond that has been lost due to natural (or unnatural) hair loss, this helps stop the hairs tangling with each other and therefore causing matting at the roots... xx

Thank you for your advice. I've reviewed my aftercare advice sheet and I need to put more emphasis on separating the bonds. Lol @ the 50 shades of grey answer everyone seems to be reading that book so it's probably a good one to use on clients at the moment!
I've never heard anyone doing the root trimming before! Great idea but one wrong slip and it's bye bye hair extension lol
Thanks again peeps!

I do root trimming too! Only with prebonded though. I think it does help with matting. But I can't stress enough to clients about bond separation! And also not washing the hair over the bath!

Hi there, can you tell me a little more about root trimming please? Ive recently come across quite a few matted clients and it seems like it could have been prevented with this. How exactly do you do it so as not to cut off the clients hair? Sorry if its a dum question lol!
