Hi

Do you guys have any views about which types/brands of base coat or polish do the best job of preventing nail yellowing?

(Or conversely, are there any you've found that cause worse staining than others?)

Ta :)

I love calgels calcrystal over French it just makes them so fresh, although Calgel have brought the new IZ gel out now which is amazing btw but there is no yellowing with this gel x

Thanks. To clarify, I meant staining of the actual nail, not yellowing of the polish.

Wearing a base coat does not actually prevent the natural nail from yellowing ... That is a myth. If you do not want nails to stain then use a high quality professional polish that does not contain Formaldehyde.

The function of a base coat is to anchor the polish to the nail and to provide a smooth surface on which to paint.

Yes there are. If a polish is going to stain, it will stain, base coat or not.

Most staining is due to prolonged wear of polish that contains Formaldehyde, but this is not the only cause of staining. Some polish pigment will stain ... Usually cheap polish. There are also other causes of staining.

I have never personally found base coat to do anything to prevent staining. So I suspected it may be a myth but also hoped I have just been using the wrong stuff, which is easy to remedy!

Formaldehyde, huh? Icky.

My neighbour has just shown me her yellowed nails and told me she only ever uses Sally Hansen polishes and base coat. Do we know if these contain formaldehyde? Her nails are really quite badly yellowed bless her.

She doesn't smoke, doesn't colour her own hair or anything. Oh, I have just googled Sally Hansen polishes and apparently they don't contain the 3 nasties. (According to their FAQ's). I would really appreciate any thoughts on this. Thank you!

Oh, and Geeg, you mentioned other reasons for staining. I was curious to know what these may be or are there simply too many other possible reasons? Thank you again.

That's very kind. Thank you for your reply. I'll certainly bear this product in mind. I was hoping more for prevention ideas rather than cures (although a cure is definitely needed at this stage!).

Thanks again!
