ButterflyGal

I have put up the price list on the window (Its a beauty salon) and a lot of customers read it but then walk away, not really many people walk in after

Why is that?? :( should i take it off??
is it a good thing or a bad thing??

Thanks

And our business has been opened for 3 weeks now...

Take it down put it by desk, keep door open when possible, stand by door also when possible and hand out price lists :)

Well- it's a good thing they're looking- and not everyone is going to drop what they're doing and rush in.

But- give them a reason to walk in there and then (it's called in "imperative")- invite them in (via your poster/price list) for a chat, or a free consultation, or 10% off a treatments.

ALso don't mind me saying this but when i see a customers interested and reading the price list from outside, you think i should go out and ask what they are interested in and invite them inside?? is that not rude?? like pushing the customer or would they be ok with that?? if the would be ok with it then great! they can get to see our customer service and know we want to take care of them and advice them...

but if they don't then...

I'd hate that personally. It's like when you're abroad and people are hassling you go into their restaurant. Seems a tad needy....but if it works it works.

It just wouldn't work with me! :)

Take a picture of your window, and post it on here...lets's see how attractive or otherwise it looks.

Someone mentioned in another post about using things that attract all 5 senses which I thought was a fab idea.

So visual, the initial look of the salon, dressing of the window, hearing- happy laughing clients and staff perhaps & nice music playing, smell- coffee smells are always so inviting to me no matter what the business, taste- "come in and have a xxxx treatment and have receive a complimentary cupcake" (or whatever you think for this)
And touch- no idea Lol but you get my drift :wink2:

My initial thought is there's too many posters, or maybe the way they're arranged is too busy. I would pick out just a couple and then rotate them every few weeks to make the window look different and interesting frequently.

I would also "dress" the window, make it visually stimulating with accessories such as baskets filled with some of the products you use perhaps and some nice material arranged in the window along the bottom like organza

Seems like a good idea, well i think i will leave the door opened, it is more welcoming and i have the licence to play music so i do play music in the salon, now that the door will be opened they can hear it too... :)

do you mean rotate the posters as in change them or as in the position?? :)

Yes as in just have a chosen few, put the others away and then rotate them every few weeks so there's different images/info to read each time. Too many just looks messy.

If you're allowed, I would also have a board outside the shop with your offers on rather than have hand written posters x

I agree with alternating the posters weekly / fortnightly as there are a few too many for me personally. Also, do you have access to a pc to do the offer posters for the time being? Rather than hand written? :)
By the way, love the actual shop front and name :) once you have tidied the window a little it will be fab !!! :) well done and good luck xxx

Bear in mind that this is advice coming from a poncey designer. But I see some hand-written posters.....that's not very professional really.

We can't all afford proper posters printed (but it'd help) but if you can't then have a go at some yourself on Word and print them out.

You're "selling" style and beauty- so go the extra mile and project that. Hand-written posters (IMO) indicate a "short-cut".

If it were me- it'd create an impression of "if they can't be bothered to print a poster out- are they going to be bothered to do my nails properly?"

Tough love I know :)

From a potential clients point of view there are too many small things on the window.I like to see less things but with bigger text.Bombarding people with too much info puts them off i find.
From a salon and fellow industry person!-We have bay windows so never put things in them but we do have a rather large floral display on one bay window which people always comment on.They say it makes it look inviting!
We always have say 1 a4 sized very well printed and laminated poster advertising the newest thing or an offer which clients look at freely, but mainly we have an a board outside the shop.We are in a village so dont get foor fare, however the amount of people that ring after theyve driven past is unreal once they see the board.Very simple large writing on it and not too much info. You need to give them a reason to come into your shop,ie-If everythings up on the window for all to see there is no reason for them to be inquisitive.

Love some of your nail posters though and you have a great sized window there for people to see in and spot whats going on inside.x

Love the enthusiasm, but agree looks busy.

A poster should grab your attention and give an instant message, you don't want to have to search the posters for the info

I agree, as a potential client i think the window is too busy for me. I would like to be able to look into the salon and see the layout, the staff and clients, i would like to see work stations too. Something visual in the window it self like flowers etc. But not too much where all i see is the window and nothing else.
When i eventually open my own salon this is how i would look at my shop window.

I personally would have the price list inside (not in window) so people have to actually come in for a price list and then you can just introduce yourself and say a little smiley hello :) maybe just have offers in the window? Along with 1 or 2 brand posters an change them often :) imho XxX

after a few days recently ever since i have had the price list on the window i have noticed people not coming in now i will take it off...

Thanks! i wish i knew this before...knowing this now i may have lost clients :/ :(

hopefully this would help the business to more clients coming in for a treatment

The reason why we had so many posters as i though that customers knew what we do they would come in basically we had thought that the posters were going to attract the customers in the shop to show what we do and what we do is different from out competitors

Nor me, I'd run a mile. A bit like the charity workers rattling their cans on the high street.

I always look at price lists in windows, walk away, think about it, then maybe book in. I would never just walk in and book after just seeing the price list. It's the same as restaurants who display their menus in their windows. Stop panicking!!!

Sorry, just seen your pics re window. Far too busy. I would just walk past and not read any. If there was just a price list I would stop and read it. But that's just me....we're all different! Although I think the posters are too much for anyone. Sorry I'm not much help. I hope you find the right solution.

Yes, in tasteful frames on the wall. Something for clients to read while getting their nails done. But not too many! You could display them in a nice line or pattern on the wall and alternate them as suggested by other posters above.

Ok because to be honest don't really want to throw away the posters and i think it would be nice around the shop inside...and some in the treatment rooms too?? :)

When I had my salon, I never had price lists in the windows. If a client wants a price list they will come into the salon and this then give you the opportunity to sell not only your treatments, but yourself (and staff if you have any). Sooo many clients are gained not just by the treatment list, but the welcome they receive when they come into the premises. Ie, if they ask for a price list, ask them what treatments, in particular, they are interested in, is the treatment for an occasion, (ie a wedding, holiday), etc? If so, you can ask when it is, where it is, have they had the treatment before, etc.......... engage them in very friendly but professional conversation. This way, not only will they feel reassured they are coming into a friendly salon (some clients are still very intimidated about entering a salon environment), but it also gives you the opportunity to up-sell from the info they are giving you without them even realising you are doing it.

hth, let us know how you get on - and good luck xx

Yes, I agree, too much information on the window! It can also be off-putting if there's no customers in the salon and 2 or more therapist standing around chatting.

Maybe you could put a rack outside with some leaflets in for people to take away and read at home - this could include a discount on first treatment.

Good luck with your business, it will be fine but will just take time to build up.

Hello hope you dont mind me commenting, I agree with what's already been said that the window is far too busy and that the handwritten signs dont look very professional.

I just wanted to let you know that I put signs in the window all the time, and they change frequently depending on what special offer is running. I used to print them on my computer but to be honest these dont look too professional either. Now I order vinyl signs from Vista Print, they look nice and professional, and for an A3 colour sign including VAT and delivery they're just short of £20, so completely affordable if you are changing your shop front frequently.

For me the window is to busy, i would remove all the posters and have just a few inside, would also take down the price list from the window.

I would rather go into a shop and ask for a price list then read it off the window.

Good luck x
