Hi geeks - currently with Santander and have been for about 10 years with free business banking. They are now changing the goal posts and want to charge per month.
Could any of you lovely geeks please recommend another bank that does free banking that you have used and that you find good? we are based right out in the middle of the country and dont use a branch, but do use a card machine plus take cheques and cash into our local post office.
any help much appreciated.

I've got the same account, was originally Abbey, I've done some quick googling but can't come up with anything comparable, I've also got a card machine to take into consideration.
If i didn't have the card machine I'd just get a personal bank account as they are free, the Tax man doesn't care where I keep the money as long as I can prove what is business and what is not.

I'm also with the FSB, and have got a free account with the co-op however making a transition from barclays over to them is tricky, as they won't give me an over draft! Catch 22..... Grrrr

HSBC are fabulous. 18 months free banking including Internet/phone banking, credit card & overdraft facility (added costs). Just signed up myself but I've always been with HSBC/Midland & love them.

It's a bit of a no brainer to be an Fsb member. At the very least you get jury service cover, and the free banking with the co op is not to be sniffed at.

I know that Natwest do 2 years free banking but I only know that through doing my business plan. Not from personal experience xx
The Co-op are about to buy out Lloyds which will make them the 6th biggest bank in the country so even easier in terms of more locations

Oh I almost missed this thread. I have been a meber of FSB for 3 years and initially went with Santander for their free business banking as I believed their online system was more advanced.
I just called Santander and boy are they evasive and sounded like a politician when I asked about charges LOL.
Is the Co-op online system quite efficient? I only use my business account currently for processing my card payments, nothing else.

Thanks for all your help. Look like I need to book a day off and go into town and discuss with Midland, Co-op and Nat West.
I have three accounts with Santander and find them very very annoying to deal with when anything goes wrong as they are such jobsworths when you phone customer services.
Just been on to Retail Merchant Services to change the card machine and if i change bank accounts will get charged for that too.
Seems like if one bank dosent get to charge you for something, another one will! As someone has previously said...Grrrrrr and double Grrrrrrhttp://www.salongeek.com/images/icons/new/icon_evil.gif

Co-Op have never been a problem. I am with the FSB and thought about cancelling my membership but cannot find free banking anywhere else and when I worked out the charges incurred to bank, the cost of FSB is less so.....
Hsbc has a business account you don't pay for life as long as you don't issue or take more than 5 cheques and do not deposit any cash directly. You can open up a personal account with them deposit cash in that account and instantly transfer to business account, then u face no charges. All other transactions are free. I think its called first direct business account.
