Hi everyone I recently became redundant in my part time job. I have set up a home salon in my attic room and I am now wanting to work self employed. I've never done anything like this before so who do I contact with regards to getting up and running? I don't know where or who to contact about becoming self employed and also do I have to contact the council etc? It there a start up grant? As I said I'm fully qualified but just don't know where to start. Your help would be greatly appreciated x

Contact HMRC and call up to ask about registering as self employed for tax & NI purposes.

Visit the Business Link website and they have a tool that talks you through every step. You can register & save your info so you can check your progress every step of the way.

Visit the bank & open a business account. Write a business plan.

Phone your council to check about working from home

Get insurance & make sure it covers you for public liability.

Check your home insurance knows you are working from home.

These are the first things I would do then website, advertising etc.

I don't think this day & age there are any start up loans but you can get credit/overdrafts at the bank.

First things first - write a to do list!!! Xxx
