View Full Version : What would you do for this? Cracked nail
My sister trapped her nail and it's cracked down the nail plate. I personally think strap it up and let it heal for a few wks then take some length off and keep strapped up till damage grows out but if anyone can offer any more advice please do so.

Clean it thoroughly with normal wound cleaner/saline solution cover it and leave it to heal. I split mine straight down from matrix to free edge once and went to a&e lol sounds dramatic but I couldn't stop it bleeding. They cleaned UT and covered it to stop infection. When it isn't painful take some length off it to make it more comfy and just leave to heal. Xx

If its not bleeding anymore, and thoroughly dry, you can treat it like a back fill. Trough out the crack and fill it in. I've done it. I followed her, tho, to watch for any sign of moisture or infection. After it grew closer to the free edge, we soaked it off completely and put a fresh one on that nail. As long as she adheres to follow up care, there shouldn't be a problem. :)
Putting a bandage on and shortening it is ideal, but let's face it, most folks don't have time to be that careful. I know when I chip one, its either fix it or take it off. I can't "be careful" lol. Adding acrylic/gel is an effective "cast" for her broken fingernail.

It's not acrylic it's her natural nail and gelish. It's very painful so were going down the route of keeping clean and strapping up and she is coming back in a wk or 2 when it's less painful to have some length off and she going to have to grow the damage out
Can you do a fibreglass repair once it's not so painful!

Id think at this point, all you can do is let it grow and heal. Putting new product on or removing anything will make it more painful.
I hope she heals quickly.

Nothing much you can do for that. My mum had the same problem. I just cut down the nail really short, put a plaster around it to stop her catching it, and had to let it grow out. Don't tamper with it, you will just irritate it and make it more sore!

My horse bit down my thumb and there was no way I could have cut it down .
So I mended it with some gel and some silk fiber and it lasted for months and just grew out and now I got a new long fine nail. When mended the hurting stopped as well, I got an salve from my GP I put under the free end daily.
I mend a lot damages with silk or glass fiber and got strong nails that’s really lasts, I do prefer to embedding them with gel instead of resin. I start with boning gel and then put one layer of strong gel, cure and put the fiber in the sticky residue , applying another thin layer of strong gel and then cure and finish off with some pink builder . Can even rebalance the nail over and over again. I don’t need to trim down the length at all.
Best luck to the hurting lady

Not sure how it could be done with l&p as it required sinking the fibreglass into gel then pulling it down. How would you do that part with l&p? Don't think it's possible xx

Agree with her... If.no l&p, do a silk or fibre wrap. And if client is used to polish only, you can always do it that way with a wrap also, but you'll.have to replace it more often, rather than.letting it grow out.

This really is amazing.. I LOVE the look of that nail. Just gorgeous.
Yes it is amazing. I found it on SG a while ago. I haven't used fibreglass but it seems to be a very gentle way of repairing a damaged nail.
silk is fab for repairing nails, i do it alot.....just place a piece over the break and work gel into it and cure then put another layer of gel over whole nail to even out...works a treat and lets clients save the length of their nails xx
Ouch! strap it up this needs to heal. Don't apply anything else to it that could irritate it.

Wow! I didn't even realise you could create a free edge in this way?? Would this work with FG or does it have to be silk? Will it work with any sculpting gel?

It says this technique is good for bitten nails, I have a lady with very short bitten nails, I use shellac and gelish, does anyone know if I could use gelish structure to do this?? And how would I ensure the product doesnt touch the skin at all?
