Hair extensions - Layers

I was wondering what lengths of extensions you purchase to get a good layered effect. E.g. If I purchase 22" as my longest layer, how many inches would you go down to for another layer? 18" next or just 20"?

Hiya if I do 22inch I then buy 18 and go up to a few 16 through the top but the 16 obviously depends on how long the natural hair layers are xx
