View Full Version : Shellac Problem!
I have been doing Shellac for a while on clients and never had a problem. I have been biting my nails for years and finally decided to stop and try Shellac on my nails. I did all the proper prep & they stayed on fine for a weak but have started to lift at the cuticle - does this tend to happen when nails are growing after years of being bitten?

Shellac is not meant for damaged nails, it works best on good condition natural nails.
You do not show as a Nail professional at the moment, maybe time to update your profile as you say you have been doing clients for a while. This will save any confusion ;)

Although Iv'e only been doing shellac for a good few months on a regular basis, I feel I have to put my experience in here.
Izzidol says that shellac is not for damaged nails, and primarily it's not, but I have had several girls come to me that have been having their nails done, pink and white acrylics, (or should I say white tips stuck over the natural nail) many times, from the chinese salon locally, and through seeing shellac on a client of mine, they wanted it too.
After what seemed like an eternity trying to remove the acrylic safely, their nails were very thin, several deep rings on the nails, and a few nicks here and there on their surrounding skin. The peculiar thing is that they thought this was normal!
I sent them home with solar oil each, and the next day they had shellac. I did tell them that it was for good nails, it was the power polish etc, and with their damaged nails beds it may not stay put. However, we went ahead, and they were so in love with them at the end, they vowed to look after them and solar oil regularly. Well, 10 days later they are both thrilled that are still looking good, they are oiling regularly, and both are very thankful they found shellac.
So, I feel that people can have shellac if it's applied correctly, and if it's looked after with a good amount of TLC, and lots of solar oil, then previous nail biters and others who don't normally look after their nails can wear shellac?

Another thing as well, I thought my prep was good, but I had a few teething problems with Shellac to start with. After going through the tutorials, and watching CND's videos and also Holly's on you tube, I realised I wasn't prepping properly, I was missing areas of cuticle. Also, I was applying it too thickly.
What I'm trying to say is, even if nails are a little damaged, and your shellac is lifting, please go back to basics, refresh your proceedure, and hopefully it will help eliminate these little hiccups. It's well worth the effort.

If it's lifting at cuticle area my guesses will be that nails weren't pepped properly or that the shellac got too close to cuticle so lifted as the nails started to grow. If water then got under it it would make it lift more x
