Hi
A lady came in the salon the other day it was her first visit. She wanted a colour on and my boss booked her in later that day with me to do colour and her to do the cut. I said to her that she needed a skin test and that I wasnt very happy with the situation so she said she will do one now, so she did and the client came in an hour later for her colour. I did the colour and it was fine but thats not my point. Can I refuse to do the colour? and who would get the blame If she was allergic to the colour? Her excuse was she needed the money!!!!
thanks guys
It depends on your insurance, some allow you to do a skin test every 6 months others every time, iv no idea what mine is because iv never asked as I do it every time as part of my personal policy.
Some people can react To things quite quickly, others can take a few hours or even days, I make a point of atleast 48 hours, ad with some clients iv done a cut and blowdry on them and they mentioned a colour for te future I do a skin test there n then even if it's weeks ahead then again 48 hours before, if they do have a reaction then iv had weeks to see if there was any problems.
With people I suspect might wash it off as soon as they aren't around me I tell them that it needs to still be there when I do the hair as proof.
The exception to my policy is my mum, she does her own skin tests as and when she feels like. Btw I always use 1.1 tiny and 12% so it will activate and develop as quick as poss so the ppd will b present ASAP. Xoxo

Yes I would of advised her to leave it on for 48 hours and book the appointment for two days time. My boss knew she was wrong but she said she needed the money x

You won't be in trouble it will be the salon that will be in big trouble if the client were to have a bad reaction but could you live with the slander of your name an the fact that you could blind someone. And leave 3 days 2isnt long enough. :)

As long as you are employed (and not self-employed), you should be OK as your boss will be vicariously liable for any damages, especially as you advised the client and her, that she should have a skin test 48 hours beforehand.
However, as Tomme pointed out, you would probably feel guilty if the client suffered harm and it could affect your own reputation in the town.
It might be worth doing a google search for information about hair colour reactions and related court cases costing Salons £1,000's in fees & damages.
Find some sufficiently scary horror stories to print out and show to your boss.
You could point out to her that you also want the business to thrive (it's your livelihood too) and have her best interests at heart. Tell her you'd hate her to lose her business over something so basic.
If all that fails, look for another job...

My insurance that covers me in the salon means I have todo a skin test no matter what. I couldn't have any one Have a colour the same day as it needs at least 48 hours,
However Tomme I'm intrigued to know why you mix yours? I've always been taught to use neat tint...
Here's why I skin test:
This client has never been allergic to colour I've coloured her hair for a while now. It was coming up to 4months an because she was under stress I told her I wanted to skin test again. this was the reaction that evening.
I mix because I use a colour with te most ppd which is te main cause of reactions, but try may also be allergic to hydrogen peroxide, mixing means they get the test of both. Sounds mad but I'm allergic to the plant tree thing we have growing up our house, it's not something most are allergic to and it's v in common, that's y I wondered about the peroxide and decided to mix.
And like the poster saying about te £1000's of court costs, it's true it's more expensive to be sued than the tint would have made you, there's swings and roundabouts in everything. Oooh after first time I know of I used that saying :) xoxo

Never thought of mixing colour for a skin test, I've always had it drilled in to me that neat tint is the way forward when skin testing, you have a point though, more and more people seem Be becoming allergic to more stuff.x

That really grates on me.....why should the salon suffer if one stylist doesn't play by the rules? I say it should be the same as supermarkets....if one member of staff sells to underage it's THAT member of staff that's fined etc! So if one stylist doesn't skin test but the rest of the salon does....bang! Stylist gets the repercussions of it! But this was just completely out of order by the salon owner x

Agree blue! Its the infividual's fault, but then again the work place should drill the rules in even though to us this is a basic we learn on day 1, and was the owners choice. I'd just feel sorry for the staff of a salon if it closed due to the owner being silly xoxo
im allergic to every hair colour except bleach , i used t always die mt hair black ALWAYS then one day i came out with a horrible rash and side of my face blew up! sorry for jumping on the thread just thought id tell yous my story haha x
