is the city and guilds an NVQ qualification? they both mirror each other although itec will be more theory and nvq will be slightly more practical and itec would be considered a "harder" qualification, well this is my understanding. Itec is also slightly more international although u can travel with the NVQ as well (nvq is a national qualification and itec is international but as I said, u can travel with both). This is my understanding of it all. If anyone wants to correct me feel free to do so! also, NVQ's are more common as they are usually faster and slightly cheaper but I might be wrong as it depends on the college. I would say that it is important to go with the college that seems better and it is very important to have a good tutor. I did NVQ (vtct as awarding body) and will enrol on my nvq level 3 (city&guilds as awarding body) in september and I have been happy with my choice so far.

which colleges are they? both sound cheap to me (compared to my course fees!). well its up to you, if u are going to be sel employed anyway then I dont see how it is a huge difference which one u do. You will learn the same things although itec has more theory in it but at the end both have waxing, facials, mani&pedi, make up and what else. see which college feels more comfortable and go with ur gut id say. Maybe ask to meet with the tutors too? good luck X

ooh and I would also compare which college has more "hours " in the course, make sure that u get value for ur money and proper training and look at reviews of both colleges Id say!!

I am no expert on this but i dont think city and guilds are that popular anymore and nvq's are more popular and known, if u look at job adverts they all ask for NVQ, itec, cibtac or cidesco. Thats the only reason why I would personally rather do an NVQ (but u said u want to just be self employed so in ur case I dont think it makes any difference, in my case it does as I want to be an employee too and work internationally). And I would be drawn to itec more as it is very international and a good thing to have on your cv. Having said all that I havent visited the colleges so maybe I would feel different if I had as the college is very important too and their standards etc. I would look for some reviews on both if i were u and maybe go there for a beauty treatment in the college salon and speak to the students? that way u can find out more

they are both awarding bodies and set the exams. an NVQ can for example have city and guilds as awarding body (or VTCT OR itec) but the qualification is an NVQ wheres an itec qualification is an itec qualification .. and then u have city and guilds own qualifications (level 2 and 3) and i dont know the difference to be honest, lol its confusing alright. then u have cibtac and cidesco too (cidesco being the highest of them all and most expencive one). any idea what ur going to do? good luck with it anyways x

I felt ok, it was one year. I think the more you practice the treatments the more confident you become. :)
