Just want to say that since opening my home salon in Feb this year, it has been the best thing I ever did! Definitely recommend it. We bought a brand new purpose built house with inbuilt planning for running a business from home! They come with work room areas on the ground floor. Since opening I have had a magazine journalist write a brilliant article over two pages about my home and my business and how it works for me which has actually drummed up a lot of extra business and now a persimmon homes journalist wants to send a film crew round to film us for the day to go on their internet advertising and I will be able to link it to my website they said! I'm sooo happy right now. Just wanted to share my joy and say anyone thinking of cutting out room rental costs and opening a home salon.. do it and don't look back!

That's so good Lyn. I think people are not sure what to expect sometimes. It's nice when they are so pleasantly surprised! I still need to decorate the shower room we put in. Hoping to do that this week. Long may the success of our home salons continue. Clients seem to love the peaceful one to one care and easy parking out of the hustle and bustle of town salons. I also rented rooms and saving lots! X

Congratulations, I'm so jealous, lol.
I'm in the process of finding out about planning from my local council to work from a cabin from my back garden. I've been told that potentially I need to apply for formal planning permission which will cost £319, gutted is an understatement.
Long may your business go from strangth to strength. xx

missy just think of it as a small price to pay for what could be the start of something amazing. If you have the clients from wherever you are now, I grantee they will follow and love the cabin even more! A log cabin sounds lush.

Well done you, you seem to be doing really well, maybe you can post some tips for other geeks trying to do the same to give us a chance to emulate you.
We are just getting the final bits together for my home salon. I am lucky that my husband is a very good builder and an excellent carpenter. He has remodelled one of our outbuildings so it is becoming a nice little building with a nice bathroom including a whirlpool bath and a body jet walk in shower. A cloakroom, a full tiny kitchen so I can mak, prepare or keep warm little finger food and snack type party nibbles, huge room to use for training or treatments and 2 more rooms. I will probably use one for tanning and the other for reception or rent it out. Scary business when the launch date gets closer. I keep pushing it back because there is so much I want in place before then

That sounds great. I also have two rooms and thought about renting the other out to a business but haven't gone down that route yet. Maybe one day. I don't know what the secret is to making it a success but word of mouth also is helping me out a lot! Websites make a real impression too. A lot of people praise me on mine saying its easy to work out and all the relevant info is on there and its always up to date.

I am on my phone at the mo which no longer allows me to upload pics on here for some reason but I shall try and upload some when my husband brings his laptop home. Would love to see other peoples. Summer houses and log cabins sound so cosy! Such great potential. X

I also opened my home salon last year after having a salon for 4 yrs. The over heads got too much and there was too much stress also my mum was very poorly at the time so I made the jump and can honestly say it was the best decision I've ever made!!!
Since moving I've kept exactly the same clients and I'm also expecting my first baby in 9 weeks!!
I also say to anyone, don't hesitate in making a decision to work from home it really is great!!

Sorry to but in and ask a question but how did those of you working from home get on with getting permission from your local councils? 😄

You phone them up and ask them what they require you to do, because they are all different.
Mine was a letter explaining what my situation was, including parking and client flow. A short time later I received my permission via letter confirmation which I have filed with my other important documentation.

Where I live is quite interesting cos the 5 houses down my street are made for the purpose of running a business. All 5 of them will be running businesses from home. There are quite a few of these style houses round here. A great concept!

Thanks for your reply, I have already emailed the council with all the details and basically they want me to apply for formal planning permission which is app £320😞. If you check out my blog I've put the email response there.
Can I just ask what did you say for client flow as this is one of the issues they have brought up in their response.
Thanks once again😄x

Yes unfortunately planning is a pain, you might need building regulations as well which is another £288. The minute there is any form of heating in the structure plannig gets involved, even a conservatory will need planning permissions if it over a certain size and if there is heating size doesn't matter big or small you need planning.

After going through this thread and all the photos on Show me yours....... I've decided to take the plunge and open up at home. EEEKKKKK!
So for those of you who have small children, how do you do it and manage your home businesses? xx
i have a home salon in my conservatory at the minute, not ideal but its a start. although my children are older teens they still make themself scarce when clients arrive and leave as clients have to walk thru lounge to get to conservatory!! am hoping to move to bigger house with more purpose built salon but at the moment clients are happy as long as you give good treatments....also as im at home i can cook dinner have a break and then start again for the evening so can work late to fit everyone in!! also i love the fact i can hoover, do washing etc inbetween clients instead of coming home to it all xx

I do it, you child has to be looked after either at nursery or grandparents. Only thing I don't like is having to keep my house permanently spotless!

People probably worry that if they go from working in a salon to a home salon that it won't be as busy but I can safely say it has been the total opposite for me. Saturdays when I room rented in a salon were really quiet even though it had a passing trade, since I've been here at my home salon I have had to take on another staff member as I've been crazy busy! She is sharing my room with me, working on my days off but eventually as I progress I would like to have her in my other downstairs work room.

I room rented in a salon. Most of the clients followed me onto my home salon once I moved and I've also gained a lot of new interest. I am fully booked most of the time now working part time around my kiddies, instead of twiddling my thumbs at the salon. I don't advertise much these days. Word of mouth is working its magic. It probably is north Maybe doing a bit of mobile first or room renting to build up your client base.
