Hi geeks,

I went for an interview last week to do nails (mainly) and a few beauty treatments. The salon owner got back to me today to say i've got the position YEAHHH  however she said i can either become a salon employee or rent a space at 40euro p/w. It is a very busy hair salon on a main street in town, so the question is 'what would be the better option?'

Any help appreciated,

Grace x

Depends on ur experience and how much ur services cost.

If its a busy salon in a good location then 40e a week is a bargain!! I would be very tempted to take the rental option in your position. There's pro's and cons to both; if you take the self employed option you have your own overheads regarding advertising, products etc, and on quiet weeks you might not earn very much, but if you market yourself well there's really no upper limit to what you can earn. If you take the employed position you will get paid regardless of how busy or quiet you are, but then you will limit your maximum earnings and will only earn so much even on your busiest weeks. I rent a room for £50 a week and its very worthwhile, even on quieter weeks I still earn at least the same amount as I would as an employee, perhaps with the odd freak week where you earn very little, but the weeks where you earn more far outweigh the quiet weeks if you advertise well etc.

Its also a question of discipline, have you got the motivation to run your business like a business? It would mean spending evenings and weekends doing your paperwork, planning your special offers, updating your website, planning advertising etc? If on the other hand you are looking for a job you can put down at the end of the day and forget about it till the next morning I would go for the employed option. Its just a question of which one would suit your lifestyle more.

It is a no brainier!!! Take the rental option if you want to run your own show.

You can pay it safe and make peanuts or trust in yourself and your ability to create a business and go for it.

You won't get a better deal than 40 per week and in a busy salon! I say again, NO brainier.

Is it defintely 40euro per week and not per day? If so thats amazing and frankly you'd be mad not to take it :)

Thanks all for the advice, ye made a great point. It really is a no-brainer when you sit and really think about it

and yes its only 40euro p/w pure (a bargain as said)

So I've accepted the rental option and begin next week, very excited.

Thanks again

Woo hoo! Great!

A few words of advice ... important ones ...

Make sure you get that 40 per week in writing and that there will be no increase for 2 years if you can get that.

In my experience, if you do not do that, this is what will happen. They will see you getting busier and busier and will then put your rent UP .. people get jealous and always want more out of you. Get them to agree to at least a year, and hopefully two, and get it in WRITING. Also include in your agreement things like ... who supplies the coffees, who does the washing etc ... if it is your own business then you really should provide all that yourself to be fair. What you are really looking for is to be independent within their salon.

Another thing to consider is that you MUST BE THERE ... full time. An empty desk gives out very bad signals to the clients. If you are there and not busy then offer your time to help sweep or serve coffees etc to the salon clients ... they will be passing people to you and it is a nice way to pay them back for that. Spend any down time offering a free demo nail to anyone who wants it; that brings in tonnes of business particularly with shellac!! :) Hopefully you too will encourage your friends and family to also use their hair services ... you scratch their back and they will scratch yours. Swap services with the salon .. you do the nails of the girls and they do your hair. Show willing as a colleague and it will all work out well for you. Best of luck.

Swapping services is good, but if there is, lets say, three of hairdressers then she will loose ;)

Why? Each of those girls will see clients all day ... Their recommendations will be priceless for the OP. 3 girls will have three times the opportunity to rave to clients about the nails they are wearing.

I do not think it should be looked at in terms of winning vs loosing, in my opinion. It's the big picture you've got to look at and not the small stuff.

I'll be renting beauty room at hairdressers and they have about 9 girls.. I could not possibly swap services... I'm thinking of giving them 10% or 20% OFF of treatments.

I know you wouldnt be making much off them however maybe offer their initial set/treatment at 50% discount as these girls will be your walking, talking advertisements, as hairdressers use their hands all the time the clients are pretty much guaranteed to see your work and if not you could ask them to drop it into conversation. I have to agree with everything Geeg said tbh xx
