Is anyone else here really interested in natural, environmentally-friendly, green, organic, or cruelty-free hair styling and coloring? We're looking to open a salon focusing on eco friendly hair and beauty and I was looking for recommendations on products or services and also how do you go about finding stylists interested in the same things?

Hey you might want to look at Paul Mitchell they don't test on animals and are very much Eco friendly they are founders and sponsors of several charities . Giving back is the new black !!! X

Really? No one else is interested in this here?
With all the toxic chemicals and carcinogens ... formaldehyde, sulfites, undetermined perfumes/fragrances and fumes that are soaking into your pores, skin, eyes, and breathing into the lungs of the clients and customers that cause cancer and respiratory ailments... I find it really strange that no one else is interested in it? Not to mention the chemicals from the products tested on animals such as beagles, rabbits and primates.
Looking to find some other salon geeks that are into non-toxic, cruelty-free and natural and organic products and services. There are tons of awesome new brands and ways to do things without all the harsh stuff.
Anyone else here a fan of NOT getting cancer while making clients look beautiful? Would love to trade notes and get some product ideas!

When I qualify I will do everything in my power to choose brands which do not test on animals. That's my intention but whether enough products are available is another matter - and they give quality pro results!
It's a pity profit equals cruelty in many hair & beauty brands.
I love the idea of Eco friendly ad cruelty free, but I actually take offence to you saying about the chemicals causing cancer and respiratory problems, all the products I use (professional) have a health and safety standard, my aunt has had lukemia, and after having her hair coloured she felt a lot better in herself and her mood, which (according to the nurse's taking care of her) physically improved her health due to feeling more positive and less stress about people noticing.
My mother has Athsma and COPD yet has never had any breathing problems with the product and chemicals I use.
I don't wear gloves, and regularly get hands covered in tint, I have no health problems from that unless it's linked to weak knees?
Eco friendly means they have had less processing and don't damage the earth, not that they are chemical free.
I would like some proof that colours cause cancer, or is that from the sun newspaper where being a man can cause cancer then a few months later wing a woman does it? Another column said not having children heightens cancer, a different one said having children does it.
100% undeniable proof is needed before I believe it as cancer has been around since before man walked, but there wasn't the research to diagnose it. Xoxo

I would just like to say very much against animal testing and all for organic and natural products ,but you may not stop your self from getting cancer ,as I found out last year as I could of lived in a vacuum all my life and it still would have happen ,not saying chemicals don't play a part but not in all cancers ,i had acute promyelocytic leukaemia :-/

I smoke 40 fags a day, so a bit of hairspray is the least of my problems!
Chris and sons do an organic and mineral range of colours, which are actually pretty good.
The hi tech haircolour ranges are not organic and cruelty free, so there is a trade off between ethics and performance.

I dont know about colours but I know Joico are really big on being ethically concious.....what they actually DO about it I dont know!
Pureology products are all organic, eco friendly, recycled packaging, tree hugging, not tested on animals, play the pan-pipes etc.....and they are GORGEOUS. xxx
p.s, I smoke too so did have a giggle when the HSE told me I should be wearing a respirator to mix bleach.....(I dont reckon its the bleach that will be the death of me - more likely the bills.....)

My friend is currently in hospital with cancer. The same cancer Lynn mentioned above. This is her second time, and I can say she has never coloured her hair/had it coloured. Until this time, when she found out she had relapsed, she asked me to try out as many crazy styles as we could think of to make her feel better. We did and it actually boosted her confidence, It gave her and the nurses and cleaners something to talk about! I Am disgusted that you have said it can cause cancer
I believe we all have cancer, it's in all of our bodies, and i believe that no matter what route we take through life, if it's going to happen, it's going to happen, regardless whether you have your hair coloured or not. If everyone believed in such nonsense we would all live dull lives.
No one would eat, sleep, drink, watch tv, or even talk if we all believed these stories about things that 'give us cancer'

She has just had her course of radio therapy, but is in a really bad way. She was pregnant so they did not treat her straight away, just kept her in hospital. She had a beautiful little girl at 32 weeks through a c section but the doctors are in abit of a muddle with her. They said how rare it was and the cancer had spread or was spreading so that's why they did the radio therapy. They are also looking into a bone marrow her sister told me. But afraid of her body rejecting it :(
I've heard of the arsenic. I was there when doctors spoke to her about it but she couldn't trial it because of pregnancy :/
She has been put in a closed off room so I'm unable to visit and everytime I call her sister is so emotional. But I know she started with the same cancer as you because I remember researching to see of any woman were successfully with it or any woman had previously had it whilst pregnant. From what I have gathered from her sister they are treating her for another cancer
Is this your first time diagnosed with the cancer? (if you don't mind me asking) you can message me if you like :) xxx

I don't think anyone wants to get cancer but unless there is actual scientific evidence that hair products cause cancer, then I shall carry on as I am thankyou :)

Hi there
I'm really interested into finding these products too. It seems that companies do a lot to be ethically aware and that they don't test on animals etc but I'm yet to find a 'true' professional brand that is totally natural.
I read an interesting article online last week. It was about several experiments done on hairdressers and a control group from various countries. It looked at different factors about their general health and age etc. The scary outcome was hairdressers had a higher chance of respiritory diseases !
It's freaked me out a bit as as I'm getting older I'm finding the chemicals in work are effecting me more and more, I'm getting skin problems, sinus problems and reactions to more and more products. When I was travelling for 3 months all these things calmed down and within a week of working again they all flared up.
Surely any job effects your health but I'm definetly going to be aiming for more natural products when I open my own salon.

Id love to know what alternative your all going to use instead of foil for use with your organic colour? Because foil doesnt decompose! So it's not environmentally healthy ;)

I use a lot of foil, hair and house both take a lot of foil use, don't like scrubbing the oven dishes etc... So pile the stuff on. Xoxo

Have you not used the white paper wraps yet?
Theyre brilliant, can go in the recycling bin and do just as great a job as foils do.
And theyre alot cheaper,so more environmentally friendly all round
