Hi all,
Just wanted to tell you all... I had a phone call from an elderly rest home asking if i would do manicures for 6 of thier guests, as the usual person has given it up, i said yes but am quite nervous as i havent been there before.
Do any of you guys go to homes & do the same thing? All input would be appreciated. Thanks.:D

I used to go up and take care of my Grandfathers manicures and pedicures at the rest home before he passed, and while I was there I would usually end up volunteering to manicure or pedicure several others. I didn't mind because it made them feel so much better. I made sure there were no contraindications for massage (check with the nurse or doctor on duty) and was very very careful in trimming, filing and shaping. I probably got more enjoyment out of them than they got from having the service done. They seemed quite happy to see me coming, and while I was working on Grandpa, they argued over who got to be next. You might be surprised at how fulfilling something so simple to us can be for the elderly.

A woman on my NVQ course is learning just to be able to do voluntary work in elderly homes. Our tutor said that she'd done it and she found it very rewarding and theraputic for her. Id love to do it, I love elderly people and they would probably appreciate it more than most x x x
I would love to do that, I even wrote to all the homes in my area last month to offer my services but didn't get a single response. Maybe my prices were too high - who knows??

I'd like to do this too and wondered what prices you are thinking of charging? I personally think that they may only want to spend around £5 - £6. I know that doesn't seem much but if you could get a few bookings for the afternoon or whatever it may be worth it. I also think they just love the company and a bit of pampering. I've worked with the elderly for many years (recently gave up) Not sure if you would need a police check (CRB) but think it would be worth getting one if you can -will make it all look more professional. Last time I had one done it was £36 and it takes around 3 - 5 weeks to go through
Suzie you mentioned police checks, I've been trying to find out how to get myself checked but noone seems to know how to go about it. do you have any contact info you could let me have? Thank you!

Ive been approached to do this very thing and I was wondering if there is anything I need to be extra aware of when working with older people? I know a reflexologist who taught me a good massage routine and I know she avoids doing some 'moves' on older people especially those with circulatory issues.
Are you peeps aware of anything major?

yes, you have to be careful on people with circulatory issues when massaging, especially if they take medication for it, also rheumatism , arthritis and diabetes.

Check with their Dr. or Nurse and be sure to ask about high blood pressure and circulatory diseases. Keep your touch light and they will still enjoy the human touch.

Good luck! Please let us know how you get on, i'm sure they will love it and you will make their day. Some of the ederly i used to care for would look forward to the mobile hairdresser coming once a week, it really made their day and made them feel good to get some 1 to 1 attention and i'm sure what you are doing will be the same and you'll get great satisfaction from it.
