Ok I suppose its like saying how long is a piece of string, but I'm wondering if I've set my sights too high!
I gave up a reasonably well paid Secretarial job last year, I took redundancy to persue a new career in nails. I felt at the time, that eventually I could earn alot more. I appreciate it takes time to build your business and some days will be good and then maybe nothing for days.
I would like to work 5 days and I would like to think that I could eventuly earn £100 a day. Is this possible do you think? I do know of a Mobile Nail Tech who is Creative trained and works only 3 days because she earns approx £120 per day (well she did on the day I saw her anyway).
I've got a few credit cards to pay and my overdraft is at its limit, (which has never been before) I don't want to go back into any office, but soon maybe left with no alternative. Does anyone know if you can get any help, like a small business loan. I have opened a Business Account with HSBC, but I can't possibly pay money into it because I need to pay any monies earnt into my personal bank account to pay my credit cards and to live on. I feel like I'm going around in circles a bit. I'm robbing Peter to pay Paul and there is no clear picture of whats going in and whats going out.
I haven't registered yet with IR, but I'm just about to (today in fact). From the beginning of the year I've started to collect receipts. All I have actually
done is open a Business Account, but not used it.
Sorry this is a long one, but once I started I couldn't stop!
Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks guys,
Hayles x
Hi Hayles,
Have you tried doing a search on this topic? There have been a ton of threads about it lately.
Also, not to sound negative but...don't expect that you'll be making good money (or even money for that matter) right away. It takes a long time to build up your clientelle and to get your name out there. If I were you, I'd probably find a part-time job so you're guaranteed some income and then do nails on the side. Just until you're established enough to be able to rely solely on doing nails.
Sorry if that's not the news you wanted to hear.

thats exactly what i am going to do after maternity leave, return to work part time 3 days a week then do nails rest of the time. when the time comes that i have a good client base and can manage it full time i will give up my part time job. i can't risk not having regular money coming in.
good advice to get part time job, also, you will probably gain more regular customers through working part time as you can spread the word around more people....

Yeah I think your right, need a part time job definately, been thinking about it, but just committed myself to working at a gym (as self employed) on a Mon, Wed & Fri and thats very slow indeed!
I think that is the only way forward for me.
Thanks guys.

i suppose it depends on how much you charge and your overheads and how many clients you have.
It does take time to build up a good client base...it doesnt happen over night i know that !
Well maybe it does if you in retail but not if your mobile and not advertising much......

Hiya ..I think its possible for a mobile nail tech to earn 100.00 per day...but its not going to be immediate and its going to be hard work....some days i earn over 100 and others i earn 30..swings and roundabouts...some weeks are better than others. Some months are busier than others to..i think it is possible to earn a very good living.
First thing i would do is get rid of the credit cards...then at least they ain't going to get any worse..also maybe just until you have built up your clients you could maybe get a part time job...just to help out and still leave room for doing nails. xx
This is very hard to say as it obviously does depend on how many clients you have, how many hours you work in a day,etc etc
You could work out a maximum you could earn - e.g. how many hours you work in a day - how many full sets you could do in these hours (if you only do nails).

You also need to distinguish between turnover and profit - you may say have 5 full sets in a day at £40 so you may think that your earnings for that day are £200 - this is your turnover - you need to take the costs involved in getting that money out of the total - ie. cost of product, car costs, if mobile or other "running" costs depending on where you are based.
But we all know that we dont do full sets all day - most of our ongoing work is rebalances.

make sure you do everything you can to get your name around, word of mouth has got to be the best form of advertising!
pick a few people who you think will be a good advert and set up a reward scheme for them....as in you do their nails for free if they can get you 5 clients (not necessarily that but you get the idea!!)
have some cards done (check out www.vistaprint.co.uk (http://www.vistaprint.co.uk)) they do free business cards...take them everywhere and dish them out wherever you can!
i have also had some cards done that give a £50 discount off Permanent Make Up treatments (they have valid until.......... at the bottom so i can write on there a date which ensures they come back to me within a certain time)

this is a really good point....make sure you don't set the price of your rebalances to low!
hi hayles i am one of those who naively thought that i would be able to build up a client base. IT IS HARD. i am just starting to build a good one (it is going well:D ) but it isn't for those who aren't in it whole heartedly. Some weeks are great (like this one) and some weeks are sh*t (like last week). I have beendoing this since nov now (as a business) and am just starting to build a base. you need to be patient. there are weeks when i feel like a loser cuz i just don't have any clients and no money. I remedy this by thinking about my long term goals and i remember that we all have to start somewhere.
in answer to your question i think 100 quid a day is a feasible amount but i think that it depends on what else you do. ie if you added eyebrow waxes, spray tanning, ear piercing, tooth gems, nail art, paraffin waxes, indian head massages etc etc you'd be avaulable to a wider audience. if they don't want enhancements they might want their bikini line waxed. or they might like a tan! you get the idea.
I'm just talking from my experience here, i'm sure others will have a very different story to tell. the real experienced techs will be the best to talk to, i'm sure they'd be more than happy to give you a bit of advice!! good luck, lovey!

Thanks again geekies for all your help and advice, much appreciated. I know it was a bit of a silly question, but I just wondered if I was aiming too high or was it feasible in the long term. When I've made it and I'm taking home £100 a day, I will let you know and throw a party and you are all invited lol !!
I also do waxing and I'm looking into spray tanning as alot of people have been asking me lately.
