View Full Version : Commandments of a Geek

The Geek
07-04-06, 08:11 PM
1 - Thou shalt post constructively.
Make your posts have a positive point. Posting just to complain without an effort to turn something positive or posting just to say 'is that so?' is a waste of reading space.

2 - Thou shalt not use thy forum to troll.
This is not the place to bitch and moan about proper nouns (i.e. People or companies). That doesn't mean that you can't debate, question or raise a valid point. It means that I don't want to see threads about how x sucks. See this article (http://www.thenailgeek.com/how-do-stuff-site/26524-happy-trolling.html) on constructively trolling to complain in a constructive way.

3 - Thou shalt Private Message if thy post is for one person.
Posts like 'hey sally, give me a buzz' is like texting 10,000 people in hopes that one of them will be the person you are trying to talk to. If your message is for 1 person, PM it. If its for more, post it!

4 - Thou shalt post in the correct forum
Posting about 'how do I get a cool picture next to my name' does not belong in the Nail Art forum because it has jack all to do with nail art. Posting in the wrong forum is a fast way to get no responses whilst irritating the moderators as they then have to then move it.

5 - Reply to others how you would like them to reply to you.
This is possibly THE most important of all commandments here. I have a low tolerance for members who show disrespect to others (even if the disrespect is somehow warranted). Rude and thoughtless posts are the fastest way to make you look like a right ass in front of the world. Its also a quick way to find yourself on the wrong side of a ban with a shed load of negative reputation points. If you can't say it nicely, don't say it at all.

6 - Thou shalt not peddle thy wares
Advertising is allowed on the site via banners and auto-linking but not through posting. Threads, posts, pms, blogs or Social Group Posts designed to bait and hook or advertise a service or product for your financial gain is a sure fire way to get your post deleted and possibly get banned. I no longer allow threads, posts, blogs, or social group posts to be made offering 'special deals' or 'special deals for geeks only'.
If another member is asking about your product or service, or if your products or services are relevant to the topic at hand you may respond without wording that would consider the post to be an advertisement. Once again, I would encourage you to ask a moderator if in doubt about this rule to avoid deletion of posts, an angry mob of geeks and a potential ban.

7 - Thou shalt search for thy answers
Have a burning question? So have thousands of others (where do you think the 500,000 posts have come from?). Try a search to find your answer. If you cant find it or you are not fulfilled with the results feel free to post away!

8 - Thou shalt not make thy signature look like the Vegas Strip.
Using 50 smiles and making every other word a different colour or making the signature the size of the grand canyon irritates countless (especially me). Keep your signatures clean and simple and follow this article (http://www.thenailgeek.com/how-do-stuff-site/13166-signatures.html)on signature guidelines.

9 - Thou shalt not make threads bitching about reputation points
This is a serious bug bear of mine and its also the fastest way to get more bad reputation points (en mass)!

10 - Thou shalt use the spell checker
As long as you are using Internet Explorer, there is a spell checker built into all message editors in the upper right corner (the ABC with a tick). Poor spelling makes you and the site look bad. Google and the site indexes the misspellings and makes it more difficult to find answers and portray the site as the epicentre of professionalism.

11 - Thou shalt THINK about the title of thou thread
The fastest way to get your thread ignored is by using titles like 'Help!!!??!?', 'Read this!', 'What do I do now?', etc... They are too vague and most geeks ignore them because the title doesn't say what the thread is about.
While I'm at it, titles like 'Wot products u use 4 this?' is a great way to come across as a 14 year old trying to get your Sally Hansen bottle of nail enamel open. Most professionals will avoid threads with titles like this.

12 - Thou shalt praise thy Auto-Linker.
The auto-linker is a very popular bit of code I wrote to give quick access to relevant links. An good example of an auto-link is this: MMA. If you are reading a post on and see an auto-link, hovering over it will generally give you more details on the word and usually a link to an article for more information.

13 - Edit thy mistakes!
There is a fancy facility on the site here that actually allows you to edit your post. Its called the edit button. Use it if you spot typos or mistakes in your post.

14 - Thou shalt learn how to use thy site
Read the 'How to do stuff on this site (http://www.thenailgeek.com/how-do-stuff-site/)' forum as well as the Frequently Asked Questions (http://www.thenailgeek.com/frequently_asked_questions.html) area to maximise your geeking experience.

15 - Thou shalt post at least 1 thought provoking thread per week
The best threads are those that stir up discussion and constructive debate. We all have different tastes and we don't always agree with one another. A thought provoking post should encourage our differences and champion our individuality without making someone feel bad because you do not agree with them.

16 - Thou shalt not use off-site smilies/name plates
I have allowed these up until recently. I'm not going to jump down anyones throat for it yet, however I kindly request you to stop using them. Why? These images are almost ALWAYS ad trackers (like spy ware). As cute as some of them are, our priority should be for the privacy of the users of the site

17 - Thou shalt link to www.salongeek.com (http://www.salongeek.com) whenever possible
I don't mean 'go spam other sites' or link to it in your posts here. Other sites with links to this one encourages more users and also increases page ranking on Google.
18 - Thou shalt not libel or make racist comments
Libel is 'written slander' or defamation. Writing libellous comments about people is a sure way to get yourself sued and/or banned from the site
19 - Though shall not give pseudo-professional advice
In the forums where you are not a professional (i.e. the Hair Geek forum if you are not a professional hair messer) you may not give advice. This is a forum for professionals and the only way to keep it that way is to make sure that you are very careful in your comments that you make in forums where you hold no qualifications. It is fine to chime in with opinion as long as it does not lead readers to construe that the information you have given is a professional recommendation. On that note, please do NOT recommend OTC (Over the counter) products and services. These are not professional.
20 - Thou shalt not suggest more commandments in this thread.
Just PM me the suggestion and ill look at implementing it. It looks odd for there to be a 'hey, you should include xyz in the commandments' only to have it added later. In other words, once it gets added it looks like you didn't freaking read them in the first place!
21 - Thou Shalt Not Advertise in Your Signatures.
Signatures are not a place to advertise. Promotional verbiage in off-site links will be treated the same as spamming.
22 - Thou shalt visit this page once a week
Not only to refresh your memory but also to see how the commandments evolve.

The Geek
23-02-07, 09:08 AM
er, your pm confused me because it doesn't have anything to do with this thread. And yes, I know the difference between slander and libel considering the amount of twits that have tried to sue me for supposedly 'slanderous' posts users have made on this site (which were really just posts that they didn't like) ;) . Anyway, thanks. I eventually found the announcement it pertains to that I wrote several years ago.

Sorry for the confusion, thought my query sparked off the geek rules. Assume this rule will be changed now?
For those who are bemused, one of the rules mentioned "no slander" and that is spoken word, not written, I suggested it was changed to "Libel", which is the written word and obviously pertinent to this site.

How can Sam monitor what the Geeks are saying on the site continuously, he has to work too!

It seems we are all slanderous/libelous (lol is that a word?) if we say we dislike a certain product.

I think if there are some things being written that we disagree with, we can all use the ignore function. This is what it's there for.

Hope this helps Paris.

paris

Thanks for the reply.

I appreciate that Sam is not able to police this site all the time - why should he? There are rules we should all keep to, as long as they apply here.

We are told to read and check these rules - and comment on them, and that's what I did.

Slander is the spoken word, and therefore meaningless on this site, what it should be replaced with is libellous, which is the written. Simple.

It may indeed have been formulated some years ago, but the meaning has not changed.

If it is changed to what it should be, then the moderators can police it by looking at iffy posts drawn to their attention - and warning posters. It's no good having a commandment that makes no sense at all - is it?

I guarantee you that it is one of the many things the moderators do on a daily basis.

I personally don't think it's right that this is being discussed on this thread, if there are niggles and/or complaints then there are avenues to go down, ie private message, email, site feedback etc.

Can we all now please drop the subject and leave it to be dealt with in the correct manner?
Thanks

Due to some ambiguity and inconsistency regarding the rules use of Social Groups to advertise products and services, I have updated commandment #6 to explicitly prevent advertising via Social Groups. Specifically the change is highlighted below in red:

6 - Thou shalt not peddle thy wares

Advertising is allowed on the site via banners and auto-linking but not through posting. Threads, posts, blogs or Social Group Posts designed to bait and hook or advertise a service or product for your financial gain is a sure fire way to get your post deleted and possibly get banned.

I am new to the forum and have been looking at discussion regarding Nail Canes. It seems many people are having difficulty obtaining them in the UK. I have recently started buying from a local manufacturer/distributor and would like to share this information without breaching your rules on advertising. Am I allowed to do this as it is not for personal gain.

Just a gentle reminder here about two Commandments specifically - the one about peddling your wares and the one about Private Messages.

There have been quite a few posts creeping in on threads where product recommendations are being asked for and people with potential financial gain are posting with merely PM me for more details - this comes under both peddling your wares and PMs.

Come on guys make life a wee bit easier for us Mods. We dont want to have to wield that big stick!

Ironically,

Thou "shalt" not allow for HUMAN error??

SHALT IS NOT A WORD IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE. THE WORD YOU ARE LOOKING FOR IS "SHALL".

Immediately, you have made a farce of your own rules!

"10 - Thou shalt use the spell checker
11 - Thou shalt THINK about the title of thou thread
12 - Thou shalt praise thy Auto-Linker
13 - Edit thy mistakes!
14 - Thou shalt learn how to use thy site
15 - Thou shalt post at least 1 thought provoking thread per week

17 - Thou shalt link to www.salongeek.com (http://www.salongeek.com/) whenever possible
I don't mean 'go spam other sites' or link to it in your posts here. Other sites with links to this one encourages more users and also increases page ranking on Google."

My reason for joining this site was due to my perception that it was a site which allows like-minded individuals/professionals to discuss career/product related issues.

But I am now wondering how on earth you manage to have so many followers?

Heaven forbid anyone dares to err, spelling or otherwise.
It is incredibly unrealistic, gramatically & politically incorrect on many levels, extremely farcical, and before you begin to mention your 'rule' of speaking to others how i'd like to be spoken to (of course, my schooling & parents failed to teach me that(?!)) I would fully expect to be treated like an ignorant fool if I posted a statement that would perceive me to be one.

It appears that you are strongly transferring your religious tendencies (which, I might add is incredibly un PC! And the fact that I am a fellow catholic and think this, speaks for itself).

People are only human. PROFESSIONALS are only human!

No one is as dedicated to this site as you are - it is not making money for anyone else!

Which brings me to "commandment" #17. You expect people who visit your site to do you favours?! Throughout these ridiculous 'rules', you are trying to manipulate the people who use this site to work for you! More fool anyone who abides by these foolishly juvenile expectations of yours.

Sooner rather than later, people will hopefully realise that you are simply an ego trying to play some superior "God" by manipulating them via a mutual interest.
Perhaps you may want to consider treating people like the humans they are rather than having ridiculous expectations of normal people and allow them to share their professional expertise without worrying that they may have failed to follow one of your childish 'rules'.

And of course, if anyone should dare to say anything that exposes you as the egotistical fool you choose to show as your public self, then the message will not be displayed, or heaven forbid, we may be sent to the naughty step with the dreaded black marks against our profile!

Forgive me father for i have sinned - i can't remember what your term for the naughty step is. I think it is something to do with making me feel like the dunce of the class amongst fellow beauty professionals.
Ridiculous!

All I can say is - if you don't want to be part of our community then nobody is forcing you.

Also - sharing experiences, hints, tips, tricks and ideas with fellow professionals helps us to make more money by bettering ourselves and our services.

18 - Thou shalt not libel or make racist comments
Libel is 'written slander' or defamation. Writing libellous comments about people is a sure way to get yourself sued and/or banned from the site
Urrm ........... (glass houses ....& stones)

Can't help wondering if you wear the subject of a certain blog the other day.....

10 - Thou shalt use the spell checker
Yep, we have non enlish speaking members and it helps them if they should need to translate words via a dictionary

11 - Thou shalt THINK about the title of thou thread
This helps the search facility and in turn helps geeks to find old threads relevant to a topic they search for: i.e help I am stuck is not helpful, but help I am stuck with rebalancing does.

12 - Thou shalt praise thy Auto-Linker
This is a useful tool and will help you find things

13 - Edit thy mistakes!
Editing mistakes stops people getting confused

14 - Thou shalt learn how to use thy site
This way you get the most from it

15 - Thou shalt post at least 1 thought provoking thread per week
well, it keeps you mind fresh and hey you may even be able to share some tips and tricks

As for Rule#17, this site is free for you to use and share your knowledge, even learn from it.
If you feel that this site is just out to self promote for personal financial gain, then you have a lot to learn. Maybe this site isn't for you?

Post do get edited/deleted for various reasons:
They are offending a person or persons, rude, racists aso.
They are blatantly trolling, posting nasty stuff for the sake of it
They are spamming with advertisements.

If you are unhappy with the rules then you have the option to direct your concerns to Samuel Sweet himself and he may be able to explain it all a bit more in detail.

Actually you have made a farce of yourself by not bothering to 'look up' the word 'shalt'... it's archaic for the word shall and appears in the dictionary!

We don't have 'followers' on Salon Geek, we have a community of salon professionals!

Something tells me you've managed to do that already

It appears that you are strongly transferring your religious tendencies (which, I might add is incredibly un PC! And the fact that I am a fellow catholic and think this, speaks for itself).
Religious tendencies... give me a break and get off your high horse. Your religious denomination (or that of anyone else) has zilch to do with anything. You seem intent to cause a stir which isn't the right way to go about making an introduction on your first post... is it???!!!

People are only human. PROFESSIONALS are only human!

No one is as dedicated to this site as you are - it is not making money for anyone else!
The site doesn't make a profit for the site owner, if you bothered to be a part of the site instead of slating it on your first post then maybe, just maybe, you'd realise that. You have no idea how much it costs each month to keep this site going, for you, and the many therapists who appreciate the fantastic learning tool that they have at their fingertips... which might I add is provided for you free of charge :grr:

Which brings me to "commandment" #17. You expect people who visit your site to do you favours?! Throughout these ridiculous 'rules', you are trying to manipulate the people who use this site to work for you! More fool anyone who abides by these foolishly juvenile expectations of yours.
Due to a lot of members posting their links on here the site is 'link-poor', therefore it's a nice thing to do to link back to Salon Geek... you know that word don't you... nice!!??

Sooner rather than later, people will hopefully realise that you are simply an ego trying to play some superior "God" by manipulating them via a mutual interest.
Perhaps you may want to consider treating people like the humans they are rather than having ridiculous expectations of normal people and allow them to share their professional expertise without worrying that they may have failed to follow one of your childish 'rules'.
Ego? You only have to read through your particularly vile post to see what an ego is all about.

And of course, if anyone should dare to say anything that exposes you as the egotistical fool you choose to show as your public self, then the message will not be displayed, or heaven forbid, we may be sent to the naughty step with the dreaded black marks against our profile!

It's called a ban! and you've made a pretty good job of making yourself look like a dunce to the whole of the WWW!

Very strange to write a trolling post like this on your first visit to the site, especially as you've only registered in the last 24 hours.

I strongly suggest that you think about what you are doing here because if it's to network with other therapists then I'm thinking that you won't have that many friends on here.

You have two choices don't you... if you want to join in with the community, learn from the site and give a bit back then please free to do so without libelling the site owner and being downright disrespectful.
Your other choice is to not let the door hit you in the backside on your way out... It's up to you isn't it?!?!

All I can say is that you clearly have never met Samuel Sweet! I will tell you something about Samuel and his wife Samantha. They organise something called "The Event" (do a search on it) I arrived feeling a bit of a fraud, however I left feeling a million dollars, why? Because they bust a gut for us and made every person there feel special, and went that extra mile (and more) Far from being egotistical, they are the most down to earth humble people you could meet. Samuel also spends many hours maintaining and upgrading this site, and not at a profit.

I am at a total loss as to why you have joined this site, apart to spew venom, which is completly uncalled for. Please, chill out, this is a really friendly site, with lots of skilled professionals, who are genuinely passionate about their work and who are willing to offer advice and friendship, which if you only paused for a nano second, before hitting that reply button in anger you would discover. :D

I think this poster needs to get out on the right side of the bed and get a sense of humour whilst she's at it. (I think the word whilst is in the dictionary isn't it Sandi??) lol

Dear oh dear we do sometimes get 'em don't we?? Those who just don't understand the 'spirit' of this place we call thesalongeek.

My advise to you supergirl (grand user name by the way :o) would be to probably not stick around too long or you will be mortally offended by so many posts that are written with a spirit of humour and self deprication and fun ... we all have personalities here .. strong ones .. you do not know us or even begin to understand or want to so why not toddle off and find another place to regurgitate your particular type of vomit eh??

... I joined Salon Geek and foolishly rushed in like a Bull in a China shop without looking at the rules ( very reasonable rules in my opinion) and FAQ.

Reading the rules has made things so much easier.

I'm happy that we have a site such as this as it is obviously run so professionally.

Best wishes

This also includes "For Sale" and "Wanted" ads.

Whenever anyone's joins as a salon geek member, they are asked to read and agree to abide by the geek commandments before they can join. Many just tick the box and never read them, which is pretty foolish as this is a community with rules of good conduct and if you do not read and abide by the rules, you do risk being censured by a moderator or even permanently banned .................. !

I'm a wee bit confused... I'm sure I read in another thread that one of the Geek Commandments was "thou shall not fully disclose thyself" (or something to that effect!!) but when I came here to refresh my memory, I can't see it? Am I being silly?

You MUST fully disclose if you are working for an industry related company, who that company is andcwhat services you offer. The relevant questions are asked when you set up your profile page.
