I have been looking at getting a kitten for my 4 yr old recently, and do you think i could get one without having to pay nearly £100 -nope!!
Me and my hubby searched all over for a kitten and the prices people were charging totally shocked us both.
The dearest was £500.
I thought you could just go to a pet store and pick one out (like you would do with a rabbit).
When we did find reasonably priced kittens, they were always reserved for someone else.
We finally found a cute little 8 wk old kitten, and we are going to pick it up later this afternoon, and its only 2 rds away from me so thats a bonus. But £70 omg!!

(sorry had to get that little moan out)

I suppose it depends on where you live.

There is a great pet shop close to me,they had loads of kittens last week for £50.00.

They were so cute too,i would have bought one but i am allergic lol,hth x

I had kittys back in the summer ( well I didn't Mavis the cat did! Lol ) and I gave them away to people. A good home was much more important than the money to me. Although saying that my Mum is one of the top breeders of persian cats in England and can command £1000 and upwards for her kitties and boy are they ugly, but people pay it:irked:

I hope you enjoy your new bundle today!

I got my cat (when he was a kitten) from a rescue centre, he was £40 including all his jabs, and he was neutured. :) He was worth every penny:hug:

I paid about £70 for my first from a private seller and my second was £50 from the pet shop.

I second that Pazzy, there are loads of rescue centres to bursting point with kittens, also there are specific cat protection leagues around the country who have unwanted kittens/cats.

Hi,

As far as I know, it's illegal to keep cats and dogs in Pet Shops in the UK .... hence, you won't find them in Pet Shops.

All 3 of our cats are rescue cats that we got from the Cats Protection and they each cost us £50.

The reason for this is that they were neutered, vaccinated, de-wormed and chipped. Plus the Cats Protection looked after them until they could be rehomed (food, shelter etc).

I personally feel this is a small price to pay.

As for pedigree cats, they are expensive. I really wanted a Sphynx and still do, but they sell for £700 (non show) and £1000 + (for show).

It really just depends what you want, where you get them from and how they have been looked after.

I got my moggy from The Ark (RSPCA) in Stubbington. They are always bursting over with animals that need good homes. Molly was about 2 when we got her (she'd been run over and broken her leg and so we don't know her previous history). She's still going strong over 12 years later!

I dont think people should buy kittens at all - there are too many animals in the country locked up in rescue centres that need good homes - if anything there will be more kittens there then being privately sold - we got our dog from a small reacue centre - paid £100 donation - he was neutered, wormed, vaccinated, etc etc and got him with 6 weeks free insurance - he's done nothing wrong ever since he came to us - totally housetrained - loves kids etc etc - travels well - he's brill - go to a rescue centre!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thats stupid money for a cat if its not pedigree, my cats a bengal and he was £350 (i didn't pay for him btw) but we have another cat and he was £10.00. Don't let yourselve pay more than you ought to do because kittens are scarce, as everyone has said rescue centres have lots of cats and kittens and if you don't fancy that the breeding season is in spring.

We paid £20 for our first cat, she's now 6. Back then, £15-25 was the average price. We would have got a rescue, but they were going to take 4 weeks to send someone out to our house to do a home check, so we got a bit impatient! Our second is 6 months old and we paid £40 for her but she was from friends who had to charge more for the kitten's because about a week before they were born the mum had an accident and had to have major surgery so I didn't mind paying the £40 cos I knew it was to help cover Storm's surgery costs.

But these days people seem to think they can charge the world for what are bog standard cats. If you take a look in the Friday-Ad the prices are insane. Considering neutering and microchipping our kitten just cost us £100, paying £50 for a neutered, chipped and innoculated kitten from the Cats Protection is good value as well as helping a good cause!

there are still pet shops who are licenced to sell animals like cats and dogs, but i would never recomend buying a cat or dog from these places, i brought my king charles cavalier from one for £800, what i didnt know when i brought him was he was from a puppy farm and very very ill, after an extremely large vet bill he is thriving now, but it taught me a lesson, this place we got him from had, cats dogs chick lizzards etc, i wish i could go back and rescue them all:cry: my sisters neighbour sells kittens for £40 but the woman is evil as her cat has no sooner got over haveing one litter than she is pregnant with the next but the woman sais if she has the cat spaded then she would lose out on money:irked:
as has already been said the best thing to do is visit a local rescue cntr as they always have kittens

i would never buy a kitten or puppy from a pet shop, you dont know how they have been treated etc. why dont you find your nearest Animal Welfare Trust or Cats Proction Leage and help an unwanted and unloved or abandoned kitten, you only have to give a donation.

I'm collecting my kitten hopefully today or tomorrow from a fairly local animal rescue place. She is costing £60 and that includes...all jabs, micro chipping and spaying/neutering when she is at the right age. Which I think is excellent and a small price to pay. :green:

My friend had a pedigree cat for 20 years (since she was little) it died a few months ago and her bf brought her a replacement which cost.... wait for it.... £500. Apparently its one of only 3 kittens like this in the UK.

The funny thing was she never wanted it, although she has fallen for it now.

We tried our nearest rescue centre in stubbington but they had no kittens in (thats what we want) and the cats protection but the wait for them comin to see if we had a suitable home wud of been a bit of a wait and my little one wud of got very impatient.
We were originally after a british short hair kitten -thats when we found out how expensive they really were (cos they were pedigree)
so then we oppted for a mixed breed. but yeah £70 bit steep but be worth it to see my daughters face light up wen she sees it.
havent thought of name yet

Yes, the Cats Protection does this as does the RSPCA.

I think it's a really good idea as they can then determine whether the house the pet is going to is suitable and whether you would be suitable "parents"

You just don't know what some people do with their pets .....

We got two lovely black kittens from a local cats rescue centre. Told them what we looking for ie age and sex and hey presto as soon as two sisters were found abandoned we went to see them and took them home.
We gave a donation of £ 40 but its totally up to you

HOLY COW!!!

good grief, I can't imagine an ordinary cat that price.

Here, in pet shops, they are 40$ and up (so half that in uk dollars). Always more if they are pedigree of course.
At the pound, you get them 50$ with their shots, neutered.. etc...

My two cats were free.
One from a farm
The other walked up to us while putting out the trash one night.
Cats are in an abundance over here. Can't turn around without stepping on one.
Same for dogs.

Wow, my mind is still boggled.
