NVQ3 Beauty Student - 11-10-06, 09:16 PM

I have a girl who is doing her NVQ 3 beauty, contact me about a placement at the salon, she has already qualified in NVQ 2 Beauty.

A placement is part of the NVQ3.

I would really love to help this student out as I have a lovely treatment room which barely gets used, but the thing that bothers me is that as I am not a beautician, I will not be able to supervise her treatments, other than mani, pedi and waxing.....and of course the NVQ3 includes advanced nail techniques so I will be able to help her out here also.

I have asked her tutor to give me aring about my concerns over supervision....but as she is qualified in all the other aspects of NVQ2...does she need it? I guess her tutor will give me her opinion.

But what do the Skin Geeks think? Should I or shouldn't I, pending my chat with the tutor?

She can do all the level 2 treatments unsupervised - all that Jess says and quite often they have done a massage module too. You'll find she may be a bit slow to start but she'll soon get her salon speed up.

Level 3 is really into all the electrical and holistic stuff and I doubt you have the equipment anyway.

If she's already qualified in level 2 then there is no reason why she needs to be supervised.

She will not be very experienced if she has come straight out of college but this will come in time.

As long as she has all the relevent paperwork to say she is qualified in all the treatments she is going to carry out then there is no problem.

We all had to start somewhere when we left college. It is scary no denying. You are in that treatment room all alone with no back up,but we all have to get past this point.

Hope this helps.

you peeps beat me to it,lol

P.s level 3 is fitness and diet, electrolysis, electrical treatments, spa and sunbed treatments, aromatherapy massage and sometimes enhancements and or indian head massage.

Swedish body massage is a seperate NVQ at level 3 also.It would be very beneficial for you if she has this as we do lots of massage in our salon. It's extremely popular and growing more and more so.HTH

to be honest it's more likely their client relation skills that need honing more than the treatments in my experience.

Hi there

I do know for a fact that there are very talented therapists in the making @ the college Im currently attending.
All the girls last week finished their placements at various day spa's etc & all were given/offered full/part time work. Not bad I say.

The best way IMHO would be to have a treatment at the college with this operator. Book in for the works/ Massage - Facial - Waxing - Tinting - Mani - Pedi. From there the usual interviewing etc if you wish to pursue with her.

Are you going to be able to have input into what products & reasoning why she chose them? Most of the time the college will have a range & sell to the girls, ours here is AHAVA, not my choice in the salon but at the moment until they have had a few weeks at work its all some know.

When I decieded to add a beauty range to Team Spa & set up the rooms, my therapists [beauty massage nails] use what I have chosen that includes equipment also.
I have done the product training for the range but am in no way yet super confident, so to employ a therapist was the option until I mastered the room & range. At least I can 100% recommend the products we use & deliver the skin prescription after consultation for homecare routines.

Alot to think about but worth it IF you make the right choice.
A half a day out of your time for a bit of pampering that can lead to bigger things is well worth it.
Never take the complete word of someone until you have seen or sampled.
Good luck with your decision

I personally would have her come for an interview if you like her then book her to come in for a trade test in your salon.

I would ask her to carry out all of her qualified treatments on a friend or member of the family.Watch her work and if you know another therapist ask them to come and watch her work also.

This may sound harsh, but I along with hundreds of other therapists have to do these trade tests.

It's your business at the end of the day and you need to see that not only has she got the ability to carry out her treatments but that she is competent.HTH

Her college insurance should cover her for the treatments that she has passed, her tutor is the best person to confirm this for you.

It's great to see someone happy to take placements, last year when we were trying it can be difficult to get answers from salons let alone someone who was happy to take us and actually let us work.

Good luck

Thanks for that guys, she wouldn't be doing her NVQ3 things just the stuff she is qualified in and as you say we all have to start somewhere and learn about salon etiquette.....which I know some people never get

I will speak to the tutor, see what she says and then get a bloody gurt poster advertising her talents! Sure I'll try a few myself lol.

I do like to help bring people on and I think that this type of experience can be quite hard to find, so I'm going to embrace the challenge.

Thanks Geeks xxx

Very good point JNail and BabSann, I wouldn't take on a nail tech without a trade test, so that will be my next step.
