Parrafin Wax Bath - What and Why? - 21-12-06, 06:24 PM

Sorry I'm a stray newly qualified Nail Geek who has not done natural nail care.

What are the benefits of putting ones hand in parafin wax? and I've been told it can be used as a facial treatment also. This confuses me! Someone please explain.

Thanks

the 'feel' of the paraffin wax is lovely too.

I have one, you can apply the wax with a brush or plunge your 'sanitised' hand into the waxer, the wax cools and hardens then you can remove it.

Its great on hands and feet, not tried it in my facials but i believe you have to apply gauze first then the wax (is that right?)

It leaves the skin feeling fantastically smooth.

yes you are right, paraffin is applied to the face over gauze. alternativly, you can cut up facial tissues and dip them in the paraffin then apply them directly on the face.
The paraffin leaves oil on the surface of the skin so it is fantastic for somebody who suffers from dry skin.
A really nice idea is to massage with aromatherapy oils before applying the paraffin mask, the heat will relax the pores in the skin allowing the aromatherapy oils to sink in better so the clients gets more benefit.

You can get specially designed wax bandages that you can dip into the wax bath and them wrap around the hands or feet. It is easier than painting the wax on with a brush!

They are at the salon so i cant look what make they are. If I remember I will look tomorrow.

Parrafin wax is great for dry hands and feet also good for psoriasis . My mum swears by it for her arthritic hands gives her great relief from her painful joints. She also dips her sanitised elbows in it to relieve her of pain. You can buy different waxes which have different uses of healing.

The heat from the wax opens the pores and allows a deeper penatration of your moisturizer. It also increases circulation.

We have just got a new cartridge paraffin wax system at college which beauty express are doing. It is an upright heater which stores spray bottles of different scented paraffin wax and is so much neater to work with than the brush. The only downside is the bottles do not last very long (you use nearly a whole one if you are doing feet) so the whole cost effectiveness thing would need to be looked at. Would be ideal for a mobile therapist though.

aj1 thinks there's somethin' strange afoot at the Circle K

There is no way you can cross contaminate through our paraffin wax pots is there? If there isn't water then bacteria can't survive right?

My neighbour had a pedi and then a paraffin treatment last week, 2 days later her one toe swelled up and so did the bottom of her foot. She thinks it was the paraffin and I told her there was just no way that could happen. I then asked if I nipped her unknowingly and she said no, so I can't figure this out for the life of me. She thinks that because I use the paraffin on all my clients and they dip that it's full of bacteria. I never just dip anyone's feet before they get a pedi.

Can someone please shed some light on this for me.

Thanks,
aj

as far as i'm concerned, i wouldn't want to dip my hands or feet into something that has had god knows how many people's hands and feet in. We were taught to decante the hot paraffin in to a plastic bowl when applying it to a client for hygiene reasons.
As for the person who had a reaction after a pedicure, maybe it was the parrafin if she had dipped them into a wax bath, or it could be the foot spa if she had her feet soaked, they too have to be sterilised after every client.

This is my blurb on paraffin i have in the salon.

Since 1962, physicians, physical therapists, and arthritis specialists have recommended Paraffin Therapy because warm paraffin therapy is one of the most effective methods of delivering heat to aching joints. Paraffin wax has a very high heat capacity, meaning it is able to absorb and retain a great amount of heat. A paraffin wax spa takes advantage of paraffin's heat-retaining capacity in a simple process called heat transfer. In technical terms, heat is transferred to the core of the affected area as paraffin goes through a phase change. As it melts, the paraffin becomes a liquid and is able to retain more heat. Then, when a hand, foot, or other area is dipped into the heated bath, the phase of the paraffin that surrounds the dipped area quickly changes into a solid. The heat that is given off is called the heat of fusion
More simply, the heat that goes into melting the paraffin comes out when it solidifies into a comforting paraffin coating, thus transferring the heat into the affected limb. Another way to look at it is the paraffin is the medium that transfers heat to the painful area.
At the same time, the heat from the paraffin opens pores and increases circulation in the skin. This is why paraffin is so beneficial to skin, leaving skin softened and more flexible.

HTH

they are called spa essential paraffin wax strips by graham professional they cost about £1.50 per pack

i know you can get them from sally's or beauty express

i was always taught that to dip someones hand or foot whether sanitised or not into a wax bath is unhygienic hence these strips are fab!

you should always transfer wax to a small container and then apply to the area. my tutor was a mobile therapist and she advised us to avoid wax in a tub instead use wax in block or pellet form and you simply heat up the exact amount needed for each client
