College Facial Assessment - timing question - 31-12-06, 08:10 PM

I will be sitting my facial practical when I return to college in January.

I'm sitting here trying to work out my timings - we are only allowed 1 hour and I'm struggling to try and fit it all in.

We have to do the following (I've put my estimated time against each procedure):
cleanse x 2 & skin analysis 10mins
steam & scrub 10-15mins approx
massage 20mins (we are told this MUST be 20 mins)
clay mask 10mins approx
tone & moisturise 5mins

What I'm concerned about is that this doesn't leave much time for filling in the client consulatation cards - which are really in depth and I reckon would take at least 10 mins, also things like time for preaparing clay mask ingredients and removing massage oil from the client.

Can anyone remember if they felt they had timing difficulties with their assessments?

Thanks in anticipation!

Your cleanse x 2 approx 5 minutes

Steam from memory no longer than 12 mins (could be wrong here but 8 mins approx is average) Scrub should take no more than a couple of minutes

That should leave you 10 minutes for your consultation

If you need to remove your massage oil then IMO you are applying too much. A good massage will absorb most of it anyway. Steam is enough really just to warm the skin and help open the pores which is about 5 minutes.

This is how i do my hour long facial:
Check visually for contra-indications and ask if she has allergies
Cleanse x2 and tone - while doing this is i talk to my client about her skin and concerns she has. this takes 5 mins.
Exfoliate and steam at the same time, this takes 5-7 mins including removal of exfoliator
Facial massage this takes 20 mins, tone.
Apply face mask (allow 5 mins for application) leave on for 15 mins. Some of mine are pre-mixed but i find it easier to prepare the mask while my client is getting ready on the couch.
fill out record card while client has mask on.
Remove mask allow 5 mins for this then tone
Apply eye cream moisturiser etc. this takes 5 mins.

Obviously if your college wants you to do it a certain way then abide by thier rules!! but this is the routine for my basic 60min facial. As far as can remember we never had a problem with timings at college, i think they were more intrested in the technique and knowledge behind it than how long it took us. However, timing is everything when working in industry so get the practice where you can!!

Hope i've helped!

xx

Thanks guys - these comments have really helped - based on these I will adjust my plan and I feel more confident about having enough time to do it all. hoping to get my mum out for a couple of practice runs before the real thing so I will see how things go.

You are right they are probably more interested in technique and the reasons for you using specific products for that skin type.

Have a Happy New Year when it comes!
