Yes they do hurt - one of my clients has one and is waiting for an op to sort it. He was rushed to hospital with suspected appendicitis, he was in so much pain. You should see your GP as soon as poss.

thanks guys its my 10 year old son !!!!!
He is in a lot of pain but not severe pain if that makes sense its a comfortable pain (until he moves) he is not hot but feels a little sick .... Most of his left hand side of abdomen is tender but the lump is visable and too sore to touch ..... just dont know what to do he is asleep at the minute so fairly comfy ..... |

if the lump will go back when pushed gently , this is fine to leave until further investigation
if it will not go back and is causing a lot of pain, it is probably a strangulated hernia, requiring an emergency op,but otherwise an op will be done in due course you can have them on both sides aswell or two together, this is known as a bilateral hernia my son has had three altogether hthx |

Hello i work in theatre as a scrub/anaesthetic nurse and hernias in children are very very common and very painful. You should also consider that it isnt a swollen gland etc. I know certainly where i come from that children are seen as a high priority and have their hernia operation within months of seeing their GP/consultant. Another serious complication of hernias is if they become strangulated and your son would deffo need emergency treatment. It sounds very much like an inguinal hernia....very common in boys, its where the testicles have tracked down into the scrotum (during pregnancy and early childhood) and the channel for one reason or the other has not closed as it decended thus leaving a weak opening for bowel to protrude through.
Hope this helps you out. Ruthy |
