Tattooing - 14-02-08, 06:49 PM

Hi Currently someone I know is training to offer tattoos. And they have told me, that they dont get a certificate/diploma or anything once their training is complete. My question is: dont they need a certificate to gain insurance? They have also said that they will get insurance once they have been inspected by the local council and the council give them the go ahead

Or do they just have to do so many hours of training? Do you not need insurance when offering this service?

Thanks

I thought that there were no formal qualifications for tattooing and that most trainees underwent an apprenticeship with an experienced tattooist.

You could always contact a few insurance companies and see what their policys are...

As far as I know its all down the local authorty, there is no formal qualification for tattooing its a funny industry as far as regulations go......but to open a tattoo studio you have to meet local authorty guidlines and adhere to health and safety etc there are alot of guidelines set by the la which must be met and once approved am sure a certificate of the la approval needs to be displayed and the studio can be checked upton at any point....Admittedly I am not a tattoost but my tattooist became a friend ( I have rather alot of tattoos!!) and was telling me all about regulations....

Also you dont always have to show your certificates to ain insurance, insurance is just a game of chance after all......

Thats my understanding to, the council inspection is what gets them the insurance, one of our geeks is married to a tattooist, I'm sure she'll set us right, wish I could remember who it is

We have a Tattoo Studio and My husband is a Tattooist
There are no formal qualifications to being a tattooist you do however need to have permission by the local council who inspect the premises and person who is doing the tattoos. There are hygiene rules that you have to abide to .You can then be checked by the councill at any time without notice which they do do. they then can gain insurance
Most tattooists have had an appreniceship for at least 3 years
You cannot be trained to be a tattooist .If you are not an artist you can't tattoo its not about sticking a drawing on somebody and then tracing it on with a tattoo gun .
Its about designing altering re- designing colour ,scheme freehand drawing ,correcting tattoos from dodgy tattooists .
You are only as good as your last tattoo.
There are lots of people calling themselves tattooists who are butchering peoples skin
if you are a bad tattooist then you won't last long .
All of these Tattoo programmes make it look so easy.

Thanks for the replies, I thought that she would of needed a certificate to gain insurance, so that sets the record straight. I know she wont be doing 3 years worth of training with him, I think she plans to work with him for a few months, and then start up when she moves or get a job/continue training with someone else.

I am gonna look into doing it in a few year, wanna do permanent make-up 1st!

I am not Artist, but i got an A* in Art in my GCSE's - wanted to be an interior designer but it ment leaving my family and home town to find work. So i ditched it.

My dad does tattoo's, from home, as he only does it part time, cos he works on the rigs, its more like a hobby for him. He has a room converted to do it, he had to have the council inspect it and stuff. He didn't do any course tho, he just practiced on pig's skin, and done hours and hours of job shadowing at the tattooists he goes to (he is covered - vile)

The best tattoo studio I have ever been in, it was so clean you could smell the disinfectant. The entire studio was white, with big fluro lights - you could have eaten off the floor it was so clean. It was owned and run by the local biker gang and yet the studio was probably cleaner than the local hospitals operating theatres.

I dont HATE them... i have 4, and would like more, but my dad is covered! He has no room left for anymore, he just gets them done over, old ones made brighter and stuff! He has let me play a few times on his old ones, just touching them up! I loved it!!! I use pink gloves for my spray tan so i used some of them when i was playing about with the tattoo - i looked the dogs nuts! hahaha...

I dont think there is any woman tattooists in my area, but dad said if i start doin them i will have to get them tattoo stocking things you can get for your arms cos i will look like a puff with out any tattoos...
