Rosacea covering mineral makeup? - 17-03-08, 08:33 PM

Ok
FINALLY got my mineral makeup in the post this morning.
Dashed off to scrub my face clean of my makeup....
And started over with the mineral makeup.

BUT

while I do have a coverage that matches my tone better...
And while my blemishes are a 'little' less obvious... the redness of my rosacea is showing through.
And... my face seems 'oily'?

Pic no#1 is my regular makeup (see difference between face and neck?)
Now, I'm going to share pictures with you that I would NOT share with anyone else... This is VERY embarassing for me, showing a makeup-free face...(pic no#2)
I'm just hoping that someone can help me figure where I went wrong.
After the pictures were done, I tried fussing a bit more in the 'red' zone, and it wound up looking cakey and more shiney (pic no#4)

OK Victoira - well done on being brave and showing us your photos with no makeup on.

How did you apply the mineral makeup as this can make a massive difference as to what the finished look is like. What products have you used too?

It is hard to tell from your photos your rosacea problem (doesnt look an obvious condition in the photos) but you also need to bare I mind (I only learned this recently) that mineral makeup is not the ideal makeup to see in photos as it will reflect the shine more than traditional makeup/foundation.

Perhaps that that are more up with the technical side of this can explain it better than ne

Theresa is spot on with her comments

I don't have any experience of the brand you are using but they may have an additional product for reducing shine.

I think you look great with and without the makeup you lucky devil.

Buff, buff and buff again very small amounts in a circular movement until you get the coverage you require

Thanks ladies for being so kind.
But afterwards, I realized that the first pictures.. the lighting 'hid' my problems.
I'll need a 'daylight' picture so you see how VERY red I am

I did the swirl, tap and buff, in circular motions.
A bit at a time. Just like on the video's I managed to find online.
And when I tried to continue on, to hide the redness; in the one place that I suceeded, it looked 'cakey' so, clearly too much.

I guess I'll practice a bit more and share again...
I just want to get this right for my wedding day, ya know?
Something that will stay and hide the rosacea?

Victoria - mineral makeup wouldnt perhaps be the best makeup to wear on your wedding day if your photos are going to be taken in doors as you will get the reflection issue to deal with from the camera flash.

Dont think it is so bad if all your photos are going to be taken outdoors though.

Mineral makeup is great as we "age" and I love it to bits but please be aware of the down sides too.

It does take a while in getting used to applying it - small amounts at a time and yes the tap, swirl and buff thing is the key to a good look. It will take you a while to adjust to the look of mineral makeup too as you will have a different (but good) look compared to other types of makeup.

I don't very often use the loose minerals as I prefer the pressed ones, are you using loose minerals ?

Also the redness could be due to the shade you are using ? Ideally if you have red areas that need covering then a foundation with yellow tones will counteract the redness, do the minerals have yellow or pink tones ?

I have used mineral make up sucessfully at weddings and it always looks beautiful on photos but then again I nearly always go for the pressed over loose minerals.

The best thing I can suggest is that you go to a local salon that stocks mineral make up (if you have any near you) and ask for a colour match with both loose & pressed minerals (one each side of face) that way you can see which coverage you prefer and most importantly how well it lasts throughout the day.

Im sure it will look perfect on the day it just takes a little practice.

Im no Skin Geek, but Id go with Theresa, if you think you look 'shiney' in the pics youve taken, I think it will make the shine worse with flash photography on your wedding day.

You dont look red at all to me V, is the problem that foundation and concealor irritate your skin? Ive got very sensitive skin and the best stuff Ive used is Bobbi Brown, its a bit pricey but worth it I reckon, but as I said Im not a skin geek, so maybe the pro's think Bobbi Brown is pants!

Good luck though xx

Victoria,
Did you remember that any moisturiser really needs to be put on a long time before you apply the makeup. It must be totally absorbed before you apply. I don't actually put any on before I do my makeup. You could maybe put it on at night instead?

You need a green mineral before you put on the foundation. I have a very red complexion and the green really takes the redness away. I'd suggest a yellow to be more for undereye shadows. I use the green, swirling it in until the redness is gone, giving me a clear "canvas" to apply to. It's amazing the difference the green makes.

The next thing you might want to consider is whether the brush supplied in your kit is good. You need a well packed soft brush with natural hairs. Make sure there is a little powder through the sifter holes or in the lid of the pot, swirl the brush in it, turn the brush so the bristles are pointing up and then tap, tap,tap the base of it on the table until the powder goes down into the bristles. Then apply to your face with circular motions, buffing it in.

I'd really advise you to give the green colour a try. I'm nor a skin geek, but this is the best way that works for me with my red complexiion. I hope it works for you too. xxxxx

It's a loose powder mineral foundation.

I don't use moisturizer because it gives me pimples.
My redness is due to my Rosacea.. I'm red ALL the time... mostly my cheeks and nose I always look like Im blushing or drunk if I'm not wearing makeup UGH (and honestly, those pictures actually flatter me, that lighting didn't give a true representation of what a mess my skin really is)

I used their 'spray' primer/setter. Let it dry COMPLETELY. (15min?)
Organic Facial Primer

I don't have a 'green' mineral, off to check their site now.

I can't use yellow, I tend to be slightly sallow to begin with, so I stay away from yellow's.

My 'foundation' is Light/Light fair, but very slightly pink? Definately not yellow's. (colour of the actual product doesn't look the same on the site, but that's typical of anything online, with everyone's monitors being different, etc...)

Yes, I did use the brush as instructed. Only a bit in the lid (as I saw on videos on youtube and elsewhere.. just dust really) but I did it a few times. Trying again and again, a bit more, then a bit more again, to cover the red and get a 'full coverage'.
Yup, I swirled when I buffed, in circular motions.
I didn't tap it upside 'up' though, I tapped sideways? OOPS..

The brush is supposed to be natural hairs, but I personally couldn't tell. Definately kabuki, though... tight and thick bristles.
This brush: Kabukis

This is the brand that I tried (in case you didn't figure it out yet LOL):
Home

Thanks EVERYONE for your input
I will keep trying and keep you posted on the outcome.

Whether or not this is what I'll wear on my wedding day remains to be seen, but I do know that liquid foundation needs to leave my makeup case and I need to make a change.
My face isn't getting better with age, and liquid foundation only aggravates it.
Shall keep you posted.

Bobbi Brown is an excellent quality makeup and I was actually trained at college by a Bobbi Brown Artist, her skills were second to none.

I use Jane Iredale and love it for it's natural properties and as for a base I always tell clients to go home and look at the makeup in all different mirrors and also to come back and let me know how many compliments they have had on their skin. They laugh and say I won't get any!!!!! Then they phone the next day and say "you know what my husband or whatever never comments on my skin and said I was looking great yesterday" they are always gobsmacked.

Just to be clear the foundation colour doesn't have to be yellow but ideally the tone needs to be.

If you have got a foundation with a pink tone then this is going to emphasis the redness, yellow counteracts.

Also I would avoid green as this can actually make redness appear grey which is why i reccommended the yellow tone as per my make up training.

I think this is why you need to go to a salon to try various shades as there could be ten different colours all with a yellow tone, some will be more yellow than others.
