tips for first neck back and shoulder massage - 18-07-08, 08:31 PM

Hi,
I'm doing my first shoulder, neck and back massage in the morning.
Although i have done loads in training i've never charged for one yet , not sure whether to tell my lady this or worried that this might put doubt in her mind that i will be up to scratch or not?

Also can anyone give me any tips etc that you have picked up yourselves.
I've been going through my routine in my head all day and trying not to remember the obvious things like asking about the pressure and applying enough oil to my hands to start with!

I'm know i will feel better once i actually get the treatment started and i'm sure it will all flow into place but as i'm sure you know no one can get rid of the nerves before hand!

Thanks in advance

I wouldn't tell her you've just qualified as it will give her the heebee-jeebees! Confidence breeds confidence, that is to say if you go in all smiles as though you know what you're doing she will trust you & relax. If you go in worried & tell her you've only just qualified she'll not relax as she'll be too busy concentrating on whether you're 'doing it right'! As she's face down you could always take in a card with some prompts on that you could glance at - even if you don't it might give you more confidence.

Thanks very much for your advice.
I was hoping to take some prompt cards in so i'm glad you suggested that, i will put them out of the clients vision of course!

I have been a qualified therapist for almost a year but only just getting my treatments properly up and running, i'm more than confident with these types of treatments on friends and family but i suppose everyone feels the same in these sorts of situations.

Thanks for your advice again!

I think we all felt nervous for our first paying client - I remember the first time I shut the door & it was just me and a half leg wax...I wanted to cry! 11 years later I don't know what I was so worried about!

Even now when I go on further training courses in new treatments I always write prompt cards & take them in with me for the first few until I am confident to go noteless.

I wouldnt tell her she is your first paying client either....she doesnt need to know.As well as checking pressure, ask if she is comfortable and warm enough.Do you play relaxation music? If so check she likes it and its at the right volume for her to relax.
As you said once youve done one you will be fine.Enjoy it!!
