Show and Tell -
26-09-08, 12:29 AM
I've been teaching now for about 15 years. I have 2 children, but the best birth story I know is the one I had in my own 2nd grade classroom a few years back.
When I was a kid I used to love 'show and tell'. So I always had a few sessions with my students. It helps them get over their shyness and usually 'show and tell' is pretty tame. Kids bring in their pets, model aeroplanes, pictures, and all sorts of stuff like that. I never ever place any boundaries or limitations on them. If they want to lug it into school and talk about it, they are welcome.
Well, one day, this little girl Erica, a very bright, very outgoing little girl, took her turn and waddles up to the front of the class with a pillow stuffed up the front of her jumper. She holds a picture of an infant, 'This is Luke, my baby brother, and I want to tell you about his birth day'.
'Firstly, my Mummy and Daddy said they made him as a symbol of their love, and then Daddy put a seed into Mummy's tummy and Luke grew in there. He ate inside there for 9 months through an umbrella cord'
She is standing there with her hands on her pillow, and I'm trying hard not to laugh and so wish I had my camcorder with me. The children are watching her with amazement.
'Then' she says, 'about 2 weeks ago, my Mummy starts groaning, and saying, oh, oh, oh,' Erica is demonstrating how her Mummy was standing with her
hands behind her back and groaning. She then starts to waddle about rubbing her own back, 'then' she says, still waddling, and so funny, she was doing this hysterical duck walk! 'Mummy was still doing this oh, oh, oh sound.'
'Then, Daddy called the Middle Wife, she delivers babies, but she didn't have a sign on her car, not like the Pizza man has, Anyway, she got my Mummy to lie down on the bed' ( Erica then lies on the floor to demonstrate)
'And then 'Pop' My Mummy had this bag of water she kept in there in case he got thirsty and it just blew up like pssshhew, and there was water all over the bed' This child has now got her legs wide open and miming the water gushing everywhere, oh it was all too much!!
'Then, the middle wife starting to say 'push, push, push, then breathe, breathe, then pant pant. Then, all of a sudden, out came my baby brother. He was covered in all this yucky stuff that they said was from Mummy's play centre, so she must have had a lot of toys in there.'
Then, Erica stood up, took a big theatrical bow and returned to her seat. I'm sure I applauded the loudest. Ever since that day, whenever I have a show and tell day, I always bring my camcorder just in case another 'middle wife comes along.
Now, you have a choices, laugh at this, close the page, or pass it on to make somebody laugh. I know what I did!!
Live everyday as if it was your last and laugh lots and help make someones day!!!
