Meanderings and musing of a Geek
War of the Report Buttons

Lately there has been much stupidity on the site that has been culminating into turrets syndrome with the 'Report Post' button.
The Report Post button is the pretty red one that used to always get mixed up with the reputation button. The purpose of the Report Post button is to help the moderator team identify posts that may be inappropriate. Instead it has become a tool for certain 'factions' to try and control what is being posted on the site.
Yes, sadly there are some that are either affiliated in one way with certain brands, some that used to be affiliated with certain brands and those that have their own interests that certain posts work against.
These 'factions' are littering the moderator forums with reported post notifications after trawling through posts that are counter productive to their 'mission' in an attempt to find anything that the post can be moderated.
This drives not only myself nutsoid, but the entire moderator team.
It tempts me to no end to eliminate all Waxing and Tanning discussions just so we don't have to deal with these factions any longer.
So do I want people to stop reporting posts? Nope. Thats why the option is there. Do I want people to stop being so friggin pedantic? Hell yes!
Moderating a post/thread/blog/etc... is not a simple process. It isn't a matter of identifying the site rule violation and taking action, it is often a matter of making judgement calls on grey areas. This means that not every occurrence will have the exact same conclusion. Saying that, the moderator team do a phenomenal job of being pretty freaking consistent, especially considering how many are on the team.
I guess what I am saying is... cut us some slack guys and stop trying to use the site solely for your own ends. Contribute, but do not control.
And finally, focus on you and your business. The more time you spend worrying about 'the other guy' is the less time you can spend worrying about what you're doing.

I have never reported a post either, I totally understand why it's there, but had no idea anyone was doing this with it! I sometimes go into the waxing threads, but hadn't realised this was going on! Maybe I'm a bit dense! All I want to say is, I love Salon Geek as a whole, and just want to thank Sir Sweet and all his moderators for the wonderful job they do, and please let's not make their job any harder than it already is!Posted 19-08-08 at 01:35 PM by Ditzy

It has been such a nightmare recently and it is like being in a school playground for us - there are so many tit for tat reports that it is sometimes quite laughable.
I get a notification to my inbox every time there is a reported post and recently I have guessed who or what it has been about before logging in here. This is very sad.
I would hate for Sam to remove the tanning and waxing forums but hey it would certainly make our lives a hell of a lot easier.
Please think on!Posted 19-08-08 at 01:40 PM by naturalnails

Never realised what the pretty red button was for! Could you just 'warn' these persistent offenders? Maybe if they think they'd get thrown off then they might think twice? Thing is then, I suppose they'd just come back under a different name
Sorry for the work guys (it's not me!) and as we all know you don't get paid for what you do.
Keep up the good work as I too would hate to see waxing and tanning go.
Have a Sweet day

Oh, dear, are things getting a bit silly again? Maybe this 'pretty red button' should be treated like the emergency pull thingy on a train and misuse will get you a penalty!
I've never pulled one on a train and I hope I never need to....same goes for here!
For the record, I think y'all do a great job...and I generally find if you give someone enough rope they will hang themselves eventually!Posted 19-08-08 at 06:19 PM by Zingara

I agree with vetty, I do feel sorry for the mods. Maybe you should have a thread about a day in the life of a mod ! People might realise just how much you have to do then. I think that there are way to many posts tho about people promoting their own business, training, without salongeek they probably wouldn't be half as sucessful !Posted 19-08-08 at 06:24 PM by bombini
