When I was a kid my parents never allowed us to go, not that it stopped my siblings, but being the youngest by 5 years i never got to go. My parents saw it as begging too, but I dont agree, i'm with angie its just a bit of fun. I was at my sisters last night and saw my nephew all dressed up, was gutted not to be able to go with him when he asked (it would have been my first time ever, maybe next year, my back seized up earlier in the day)
funnily enough I had no trick or treaters at my door either anne xx |

On the subject of it being an American custom, some folklorists believe it to be a corruption of old British & Irish customs, such as souling & guising, that were traditionally carried out around Samhain/hallowmas. It is thought that whilst it died out in the UK (except in folk records & a few isolated villages), that it flourished amongst the early British settlers in the US & gained popularity (as also happened with many old Irish & British border ballads & folk song). So you could see the rise in trick or treat as a re-adoption of our own native folk practices.

I was rushing about trying to get ready for hosting karaoke, and those little monsters were banging at my door. Try as I did to ignore them, I grabbed Bugs, before he legged it out the door, trying to keep my towel in place, I told them now wasn´t a good time! When I went out later I found those "darlings" had lobbed eggs at my front door GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!
Soon will be christmas ba humbug lol |

Yeh, last Halloween they egged my salon - really sensible as it was shut at the time so I wouldn't even have been there to have the option of giving them anything or not. It would have been obvious to any trick/treater that the salon was closed. Nice little kids just having fun eh?
So I wonder what I'll find when I arrive to open up tomorrow? Apparently the going rate for kids around here was £5 each according to a neighbour of mine who opened the door to the trick/treaters. ( POSTED BY VICTORIA MELDREW) |
