TPTW - are you employable? - 26-03-11, 04:15 PM

I have been self employed for quite a few years and the thought of being employed ever again makes me shudder.

But I got to thinking.......would anyone WANT to employ me?!!!

I am set in my own quirky world, do things my own way, have likes and dislikes and make things up as I go along! I also change things around all the time (not furniture, thats far too exhausting), but I try different things out on clients.

If I worked for someone I would have to work to the employers standards and stick to their routine, timings, etc.

So guys, are you? (employable that is?).

If I have to then, yes, I can button my lip get my head down and get the job done, but I hate it. The bigger the company, the more stupid I find all the rules and I loath bosses trying to put me in a box. I don't fit, I don't want to fit and the longer I do it the worse I get.
After my last stint at it I have promised myself, never again

hmmmm, am I employable. not sure really, I know I can talk a good talk and say all the right things in interview but how would I stand actually working for a company!!!! A large company definately no, cant stand being a number and working to line someone elses pocket. A small company, maybe, if I had to, Id do anything if I really had to!!! But I would prefer to work for myself and really pray I will never have to find out if Im employable or not

I am much the same! Love to do things my own way not just in work but in life in general.
I tried working in a spa and hated it! I was made to use products I didnt believe in, was made to cut corners, would constantly be looking at the time.
I could be employable because I know i'd have to get on with it and do as im told but would I enjoy it? Definately not!!

phew! - 26-03-11, 06:27 PM

Well thats a bit of a relief!

I have worked for other people since I started waitressing when I was 12, I worked to other peoples standards for the next 18 years and always felt like a square peg trying to fit into a round hole.

I think I would be extremely employable!! I work to top salon standards, can work to any commercial timing system as required and retail more than anyone I ever met.
If I ever come on the market, I would expect most salon owners would be delighted!!!

I personally work to given time schedules and can sell products but can not do treatments as stated in manuals as I always "ann-erise" them.

Hairdressing is less "controlled" than beauty. There is not really a definative rule book on how to do hair.

I think as long as your work is commercial, then it is fine as a hairdresser. I have had a few former salon owners work for me. The hairdressers have fitted in great, the therapists struggled to adapt to working for a salon as opposed to themselves.

I could quite happily adapt to working for another salon. Paid holiday would be wonderful!!

This thread really got me thinking and I came to the conclusion that if I really needed a job/money I could just about do anything (within reason LOL) but if I wanted to be happy I could probably only be employed by some one like me! I guess I have done it my way for too long...though paid holidays do sound good and not struggling through work when really ill is appealing too. As I am quite old now I wonder if a bright young thing would want to employ me? They may feel intimidated (god knows why?) and I may feel obligated to put my twopenth worth in for their own good (I guess that would be why).

Im totally unemployable. I work and sleep funny hours, naff off to live in different places when I fancy it and always do my own thing. My CV has so many holes in it, it could be a collandar.

Its good motivation to keep going if nothing else

Am I employable? nah! I could maybe manage a few months but the boredom would set in. I def think I would be employed tho - I know I do a good job - but they probably wouldn't pay me what I was worth.!!!
