TPTW - Resistant or open to new ideas?? -
06-09-11, 01:38 PM
Which are you?
I like to think I am open, and I certainly keep up to date with my Industry through this site and Trade Mags and just through some fabulous people I know in the Industry. Although sometimes I take some convincing. I think sometimes on here we can be a bit blinkered, and slate any new ideas until someone we admire approves it, and then everyone is on the Bandwagon ! Ideas I was open to from the start... Well less tips- brilliant and time saving! Gel polish/hybrids- Revolutionary ! Glitter/colour powders & Art - There is a market out there !! Ones I resisted Poppits/Dual nail forms - Sorry but not for me, I can do better freehand. Cutting tools for smiles - ditto above Bubble nails - Still making my mind up.....The Index manicure, didn't like it at first but it is growing on me and now that Kelly Rowland ( her ) has been wearing it I think it will be a total winner....so I'm in lol!!!I can only talk about the Nail Industry, but hope all the other forums can join in on this one. |

Great thread Izzi. (Can you add TPTW to the title pls!
I like trying new things. Some things I have taken on have turned out to be a bit lame, and other things are great! I used to rush into anything that had any hype surrounding it but now I am a little more circumspect and it makes a difference to me WHO recommends something. Just off to find out what an Index manicure is... |

Love hearing about new things but try not to rush any more. Depends on what it is. Gel polishes I got a couple and tried them immediately, even before they were available here. I thought they would be too good to be true but they were fab so spent a fortune.
Anything that needs hundreds spent on kit and course then I wait and see how things pan out. I think we all waste money trying new things but isn't it exciting when something you haven't heard of before pops up! |

Ha ha! I thought it was only me who didn't know what the Index manicure was. I was going to sneak off to look without mentioning my ignorance. |

Leighton Denny has recently been painting the index finger nail a different/complementary colour to the rest !!
I am sure there will be plenty geeks on here who no doubt were doing this years ago like the moon manicure, but it does look quite cool. Now there are all the options of minxing the index finger too and of course doing it all with Gel polishes or Shellac !! |

Just to add that I trained way back in the dark ages, when we etched nails making sure not a speck of nail wasn't scratched, and we used full well tips, which were blended on the nail, and used acid primer.
I am so glad that the 1 thing I took from those days is the constant need to train and update!! I dread to think of nail tech's who trained 15 years ago and are still using the same methods thinking if it ain't broke don't fix it. Things are easier, and nail enhancements are more natural and beautiful looking than ever, and that what keeps me in this business, and my clients happy. So....what ideas have the skin & hair geeks been open or resistant to? |

My work today is a million miles away from the work I was doing 20 years ago. Fashions change, techniques change and products change beyond all recognition.
Just because someone has been doing a job for years doesnt mean they have been doing it in a cave, cut off from civilisation. It does however have the benefit of being able to take one look at a new idea and having the technical expertise to be able to produce it first time, without having to be "trained". Am really not a fan of "different" nails myself, so may let that one pass me by. |

Personally I am resistant to semi-permanent mascara. I'm still watching and waiting.
I was excited to hear that Orly are launching a gel polish but having read about the difficulty of removing some other brands, I may sit this one out too. Am happy with Shellac and Gelish and I was lucky that I saw (me old mate) Gelly and she encouraged me to buy Shellac when it was first out and I got it just in time before it went out of stock |

I love new ideas and new concepts, I thrive on the every changing state of our industry. I cant get enough of learning and education either. However like Izzi I too cannot stand
Bubble nails Fan nails or duck ass nails Super long stilettos They all just go against the grain with what I have been taught and what I percieve to be an astheticly pleasing nail. Those who resist taking on board new advise or willing to learn new techniques I think are those that just sit and flounder while the rest move forward and prosper. I know which I would want to be. Excellent thread Izzi hun ![]() xxxx |

20 years ago, I was doing spiral perms, scrunch dries using plix mousse, and flicky small round brush blow dries. Bowl cuts were the in thing.
Today, it's long straight hair, hippy waves, inverted bobs, GHD curls and mussed up festival hair. Back then, brides had enormous updo's, the bigger the better. Today, brides want tight, mean little chignons and buns. Back then we had Elnett and plix. Redken was a young brand. Paul Mitchell was the new kid on the block. Today, Redken is the strong (stood the test of time) range. We have a zillion styling products, and at least a million waxes. Back then, hair was seen as a skilled occupation. 3 year apprentiships, plus 3 years as an operator before you made it to stylist. We were so "into" it. Today, it's seen as something you can learn in a couple of months to earn a bit of pin money. I get so sad to see on here my beloved trade getting so trashed at times. |
