Bit of a rant coming up!
I am self employed and hold an ITEC diploma (beauty specialist) as well as advanced lash & brow training, spray tanning, 3 week mascara, advanced bridal make up and I am also CND Shellac certified (this certification is based on both theory and practical). So, anyways I have been working for myself, nice little client base building up and plenty of regulars, all going good. I saw an ad for therapists for a new salon and thought what the hell and sent over my cv. Now on one hand I am perfectly happy being self employed but there's no harm in dipping the toe out every so often as you never know what opportunities may come along. I had a phone interview where the new salon owner, who is not beauty trained, asked me lots of questions then proceeded to tell me that I was 'weak' with nails because I don't do gel/acrylic, now I fully understand as a salon owner she wants to offer this service but I said from early on it wasn't something I trained in and nowhere was any specifics mentioned in her ad. I know it's stupid because she didn't even see my work but I can't believe that someone would say that...is she unaware of the massive market out there fr natural nail clients and just because I choose not to do acrylics etc does not mean I am weak?! She didn't even know who CND were or what Shellac was. She also informed me that anyone can do spray tanning. Ok so anyone can get trained but there's a massive difference with being great at doing a tan and being the all too common over here way of thinking that it's easy money and not even researching brands and solutions never mind perfecting technique to offer something a bit more than orange legs and patchy elbows. I'm constantly educating myself, attending workshops, working on techniques and am really annoyed at this attitude. Seriously since I entered this industry I have been shocked at how salon owners treat people...If anything it reinforces my will to continue to be self employed. She asked if I had kids as well...leaves herself wide open there to discrimination claims. Grrr! |

Thanks guys, was annoyed when I posted that but glad I'm not the only one who thinks acrylics & gels aren't the be all and end all. Her ad was worded stating beauty specialist which is what my ITEC alone covers and then she was asking if I did aromatherapy?!
Acrylics and gels will be added to my services at some point, when i have the money to train in them with CND, already wasted a load of money doing a 4 day gel course 2 years ago before I knew what proper training was and even I was shocked that I passed the course! I was really not confident in what I was doing, even as a newbie so I didn't push myself and haven't done them in so long that I'd feel miles better just starting from scratch with CND. At least then I know that proper techniques would be taught. An*Gel on here is an EA in Ireland and I'm dying to do some training with her, her nails are amazing. I've no issue with any business owner being specific in the treatments they want to offer but at least be clear from the outset instead of wasting half an hour of my time! Plus opening a salon and not knowing who CND are or thinking anyone can spray tan? I guess people just have different standards! |

OMG! Some people think they know everything just because they have a salon!! I'm not trained in hair extensions and haven't got a clue about them but it doean't make me a "weak" hairdresser!!
Seems like you've had a lucky escape |
