Ruby, one of my 2 cats has been hit by a car and killed this evening. She was a really timid house cat who didnt go out but this summer she had started venturing into our back garden and next doors. There is a main road in front of our house and a campaign to get the road made safer as cars and lorries speed along it. She has only ventured out front a couple of time but just hid under my car shaking.
The cats were in the back garden and I left them out while I nipped to the shop. When we came back all the local kids were waiting at the front door. They had seen a car hit Ruby and the person just drove off. My neighbours daughter ran into the road, picked her up and cuddled her. She laid her down on the grass but Ruby just stopped breathing. My neighbour has just dug a hole in the back garden and buried her.
I feel so guilty I shouldn't have left her outside - my other cat Millie looks so lost.
How could someone hit a defenceless animal in front of a group of children and just drive off?

ahhh poor ruby, that is so sad, your pets are like part of the family arent they?, some people have no morals , the least they could have done is stopped, i thought by law they had to stop. not sure but thats what i thought, so sorry for you

So very sorry to hear about your pusscat!
I was told that drivers are not legally obliged to stop for cats but you'd think that they would from a moral point of view, its a life after all.
How awful you and the children that witnessed it must be feeling right now!

Thanks for all your kind comments - I just really needed to blurt it out - my OH is away, Mum and friends working etc. My week seems to be going from bad to worse!
My daughter (26 months) was Okay with the news she is just happily telling folk that Ruby is in Heaven.

I am a cat owner myself (3) and I always jokingly call them my furry babies, but they are very much part of the family! I would be lost if it happened to one of ours.

I'm sorry to hear about Ruby.

A couple of years ago the same thing happened to my cat Jasmine she was a persian and didnt go out very often. She got out at the front of the house and right infront of my eyes she was run over by someone going too fast who failed to stop.
I raced her to the vets but she was dead when I got there, they took care of the body as I didnt feel I could bring her home to my 3 daughters who as you can imagine where frantic wondering how she was.

We decided to write to our local council and complain about speeding traffic, and to request traffic calming measures. We did get a very nice reply but nothing happened but at least our complaint was recorded!
