Headbutting!!! - 20-08-05, 08:34 AM

Hi all,

My 17 month old son has started to headbutt things!!!

Just wondering if any of you have experienced this with your children or similar, & what did you do to try to resolve it!

Any words of wisdom would be fab!

I know EXACTLY how you are feeling Louise. My sone does it and he will bang his head on anyone or anything including concrete floors/walls, pebbledashing, the dog! I mentioned it to my health visitor and she said it is very common and will just disapear by the time they are 3. My sonis now 3 and he still does it, althugh not have as much as he did thank god. We were advise firstly to make sure he is safe when he starts by puttinghim infront of a bean bag and letting him headbut that. We were also told not to make a fuss with him, just to ignore it, as giving him more attention will encourage the behaviour. I found it very distressing, he would bang his head so hard that he constantly head a large bruise. I felt awful when people would comment as the bruise culd be quite large. Apparantly children do it out of frustration at not being able to express themselves, as soon as she is able to communicate better it seems to get better, although Owen (my son) still does it when he can't get his own way but i just ignore him and it doesn't last long, thank god.

Maybe try having a word with yur health visitor and see if she can help.

Its frightening i know, let us know how she gets on.

I agree with mamma on this one. Just to let you know that I was a serial headbutter when I was little, my poor mother had a seasons pass to our A&E department. But all is well, I think Ive turned out ok...no lasting side effects! lol

Good luck with the little man

none of mine did this but i found when they were doing something they shouldn't that distraction always works as they forget and start thinking of something else.

anyway, it was tied up munching on the grass and i went in to stroke it
