tennis elbow or frozen shoulder? - 28-09-06, 05:07 PM

Just wondering if anyone has has this and do you think it is caused by doing nails (i.e filing)
Im having real problems in my right arm and know I have to seek medical advice but just wondered what they can do...

I have had this pain in my arm since april/may and thought it would just go away. Its a nightmare driving

Could it be Repetetive Strain Injury or postural problems from filing, or sitting in the wrong position?

Hi. My fiance was diagnosed yesterday with Tennis Elbow and he has a big lump on the top of his elbow which has been getting bigger every day.

If you've got a lump, chances are it's definately Tennis Elbow.

The pysio put a strap type thingy around his arm and the pain was relieved almost immediately. He has to wear it most of the time until it gets better. hth.x

I've never experienced pain as bad as a frozen shoulder Pazzy... it limits movement in the affected arm to an inch or two in any direction... raising that arm is a nightmare and isn't possible without using your 'good' arm/hand to do the moving (so to speak)... all strength is lost, getting dressed is a complete nightmare, even applying your own deodorant, you need help with everything (literally)... it's a very disabling thing to have happen...
I was lucky when I had mine as it was in my left shoulder, it happened in work as I was reaching for a file from my desk, all of a sudden I was in agony, no warning at all !!!
I went to my doctor and she tried 3 or 4 times to inject me with cortisone but my muscles were in such a spasm that she couldn't even get the needle in... she peeled me off the ceiling afterwards, it was the worst pain I'd ever felt. I was prescribed mega strong pain killers and also an antidepressant to relax me enough so I could sleep, then referred to a physio... the physiotherapist taught me exercises and also did ultrasound on my shoulder, she said I'd been caught just in time as my shoulder hadn't got to the 'totally frozen' stage... I made a full recovery (eventually). Do a quick search on Google for Frozen Shoulder, there are lots of sites about it now, moreso than when I had mine last time...
I've got something similar at the moment, it's in my right shoulder, not freezing though, thank goodness, the pain, although bad isn't like last time... I think it's a trapped nerve this time... get yourself along to your doctor, there's nothing like having a constant pain, it wears you down and is quite debilitating.
Let us know how you get on

I have experience of Golfer's elbow.....which is the same as Tennis elbow...except it affects the tendons on the inside of the elbow not the outside.

I had Physio...Cortisone Injections....and finally surgery..then more physio...and accupuncture........
I still have problems with my elbow!!
At the moment it is pretty swollen & painful..but I know this is because I was stripping wallpaper last week!!...I am now back to looking after myself better and using proper Pain Management techniques.

I had this BEFORE I started doing nails....and because I was aware of this problem I was always very careful how I filed and how I sat at work....I would always stretch between clients. Therefore it never affected me and never held me back in my work as a Nail Technician.

You need to get to your Doctor's and get a proper diagnosis and get some treatment before this get's to the chronic stage that will need the constant managment that my elbow does.!!

Good Luck.

thanks everyone for your replies, I have had to cancel everyone today cos its gotten worse and I took co-codamol and have been feeling sick and dizzy all day (dunno if its all connected)
but I dont think its tennis elbow then cos I dont have a lump, but it sounds more like the golfers elbow which someone has mentioned but I also have a pain in my shoulder, going to the docs monday, its driving me mad!!

I sympathise I have had endless pain from my left shoulder for months, and after physio and hydoptherapy its still not much better so I am now being referred to the surgical team (although this does not necessarily mean I will be operated on) well I hope not. It really hinders you, I never quite realised how much I used my left hand, being right handed. I wish you luck and a painfree future.

Hi there,

Unfortunatly I experienced the dreaded frozen neck about this time last year.
Spending tooo much time on the computer & at the nail desk without stretch breaks.

The pain mentioned is unbearable & movement is very limited......But
Apart from the medications [a muscle relaxant is best] get yourself a spongy neckbrace. Mine is adjustable, soft & washable. I often heat the wheat bag & place it between my neck & the brace for extra warmth & relief.I will sleep in it also if I feel like its flaring up.

As we get tired we slouch with our chin heading towards our chest - therefore shortening the muscles from the neck - shoulder & arm, pulling it all up & tight.
The brace will stop your chin from dropping , keeping the distance between the neck & shoulders consistent.
A nice massage or 2,3,4 - some black pepper essential oil[good for this type of muscle strain]
Hope your felling better asap.

If you are working without your forearm being supported ON THE DESK then you are in for trouble with both shoulder and elbow.

NEVER file with your forearm off the surface of the desk. In other words don't work with your arm in mid air. It is a recipe for disaster.
  • Choose the correct chair to sit in with proper back support
  • Make absolutely sure that your chair is at the right height ... the right height is when you are sitting and your arms are bent at the elbow at 90º your forearms should be resting on the surface of the desk. If they are not, then lower your chair until they are.
  • Sit up straight
  • Both feet on the floor
  • Chair tucked in close to your desk
  • both arms supported on the desk
  • Make sure the client is in the right position for you and not YOU accommodating the client.

Well that just about sums it up for me...I thought it was putting my heavy bag into the car but its obvious I am not positioned right whilst doing in fills (2 of my L&P infills are on their table and Im sitting on the side of the table). Thnk the sooner I get my garage converted to a nail room the better or I am going to be in pain.

I know I cant lift my arm at a certain degree (i.e putting my seat belt on, putting my deodrant on, fastening my bra, putting my coat on, sleeping on it) but dont have any probs whilst actually doing the infills.
