Working in Australia?? -
07-02-07, 03:14 PM
Calling all Aussies
My partner and I have been thinking of emigrating to Australia for a while now, and i just wondered if any of you guys could give me an idea what the beauty industry is like over there? I am not a nail tech, am a beauty therapist so any info you could give me would be much appreciated!!! Thinking possibly moving to Queensland area, Brisbane, mainly because we hear house prices and cost of living is better here, but would consider anywhere. Any info where you live would be great i.e lifestyle, house prices, demand for these services and salary etc, products used, and working hours? Thanks I am ITEC, CIBTAC and CIDESCO qualified, and have been working self employed for last year! Use MD Formulations, Vitage, Fake Bake Tanning, id bare minerals makeup and Jessica nails! I also have product knowledge of Decleor! Thanks in advance x x x |

Hi Suzy, great news that you are thinking of coming here, you won't regret it mate.
Just one thing, Brisbane is actually a bit expensive to live in, in my opinion, so you might want to check into other states a bit too, Adelaide at the moment is the best for buying homes but it depends on what you like. Queensland is absolutely beautiful, but be ready for the heat, the humidity is high so you will sweat, sweat, sweat lol. I'm not sure about the beauty industry, but the nail industry is thriving in Brisbane, check out APFA, Australian Professional Fingernail Association's website. APFA - The Australian Association for Professional Nail Practitioners that should help you a bit. Jayne. x |

Brisbane is definately cheaper than Sydney, but it's cheaper if you get away from the east coast.
I think the beauty business is thriving pretty much everywhere. Wages will vary between salons, just remember here we rely on the wage & rarely get tips. Brands used are very varied, but I don't think it would be an issue if you looked for work at salons who use different products to what you've used in the past. Product knowledge classes are very easy to come by if your in the city. I think employers would be looking more at your experience & personality. |

qld is drowning in nail techs and beauticians, but if you wanna jump in the deep end, by all means, what amazes me is the techs, be it beauty or nails in here, that open against a very competitive field, then complain they don't make it, depends on how seriously you take it, what "ANYONE" has to think about is, they already have beauticians, they already have nail techs, whats gonna make you better then them, whats gonna make them leave their stable tech to come to see you?
