Cattery, anyone used one? - 05-02-08, 01:26 PM

To all you cat lovers out there, I have a question.

What are your experiences of catteries?

We have only had our cat (1 year old) for a few months and have booked a weeks holiday in June. We are considering using a cattery but are worried that he (bobby) will miss having us around. Am I being silly? Do cats not really mind catteries? He is a cat that loves attention and has to be in the same room as you most of the time although he is used to sleeping downstairs alone at night.

Can't believe I am this worried about him, it's amazing how attached you get to them! I just don't want to go on holiday and worry the whole time. We don't really have someone who could take him for the week but we could arrange for someone to feed him twice a day.

Hi, Ive had cats my whole life and have found that if you are going to use a cattery, make sure you go and have a good look around the place first to make sure its going to be a nice comfortable stay for your little one (have seen some nasty places before)
Some catterys keep them in cages which is fine if the cage is nice and spacious, this is the main reason for going to check it out first.
You could go to the local pet shop and ask if they could recommend a place.

Yeah weve used one, we asked a vet friend and she recommended a good one, the peeps who ran it loved cats, and went in to brush them daily and give them lots of love!

Make sure you do research, you want them going to a cattery where they really care about pets!

My advice would be to ask a vet as they usually know where the good ones are!

I dont currently have cats at the mo, but I have in the past.
Catteries are a fantastic little holiday for them, ask friends and family for any recommendations.

The one we used to use was fantastic, they had little rooms each with shelves that they can jump up on to and sleep on, their own little beds with blankets and toys.
They used to let them out one at a time every day to let them explore the building and have a cuddle with the owners.

Our cats never wanted to come home when we went to collect them and the eldest did used to ignore us for about a day just to put us in our place!lol

A good cattery will have no problem with you phoning up and checking on them. I used to phone at the end of the first day to check they settled in o.k.

If you can get someone in twice a day to feed, change litter etc. I would go with this. What would you prefer, stuck in a cage for a week or staying in your house for a week.

So long as you use a cattery which has either been personally recommended or you've checked out for yourself, I don't see you or your cat having any problems.

It's sometimes a good idea to send them in with a creature comfort, such as a favourite blanket or toy.

For sure go and take a look around some - someyou will like and some will not be as clean/modern/spacious etc but one thing I did learn........check its JUST a cattery as some are also boarding kennels and I think its frightening for a cat to be close to a lot of strange dogs barking all the time !

I use one that is cats only and my kitty is happy enough there and is well cared for so I go away without worrying about him being home alone etc.

My cat cries all the way there, cries when we leave, when we come back all I see is her ass because she is annoyed, a day later - all is forgotten!!

the cattery says she loves being in there purrs and everything - attention seeking mare!
