![]() I lay money on it if any of us went to a petting farm and the chickens were in a dark barn with so many in they couldn't see space on the ground most people would call the rspca. Same for the pigs and other animals. For me when I realised my food was being reared that way it mattered. Out of sight wasn't out of mind. At the end of the day its up to the individual and their right to choose freely is their own be it free will, budget driven or simply a matter of not being concerned either way.

I have always bought free range eggs and free range chicken, any cakes that we may have i make from scratch anyway,
I really do hope (though i cant see it happening) that supermarkets and bakery's stop using eggs etc from battery farmed hens. At the end of the day we may eat animals but the animals deserve to live a healthy happy life before hand in a clean, free environment. |

I only have free range eggs and meat reared and kept in humane conditions and voted accordingly.
I haven't always been so careful in my choice but programmes like Jamie's and also Gordon Ramsay's are excellent at bringing the details to our attention. I can appreciate that for those with a family to feed cost is going to be a factor, however I would personally eat slightly less and feel confident about what was on my plate. |

I can't lie.... I don't care, it's just a chicken to me and I've got bigger things in my life think about. Honesty is always first and foremost with me as you may have guessed. |

I have not seen the programme but i have seen programmes about how badley treated animals are. When pigs are being carted off to be slaughtered, they have no drink or food for hours.
The one thing i want to ask is...how do you really know where your eggs and meat have come from. Did you see them packed? I watched something on telly about some supermarkets , and how their food is "fresh" and it is not. It may say organic and free range eggs, but are they?. This is where the supermarkets have us as we have no idea and thats wrong. |

I believe we have a responsibility to provide care and comfort for the animals we raise for food, if it was a barnful of little puppies being treated in the same way there'd be a huge uproar, farm animals should be treated with no less respect, anything less is just pure selfishness. We all have "bigger things" to worry about, but why should the 'small things' be less important? Apart from the humane aspect, I certainly wouldn't want to feed my family any meat that was brought up in conditions llike this: ![]()

His other question was "prove to me that any chicken I eat ISN'T brought up in these conditions? Do we get a step by step life history of each chicken?....I doubt it and probably a lot of people are paying more money for exactly the same thing with a different label" He's a law student btw not a small child. |

The chickens and ducks (I actually buy ducks egss more so at the mo) are pretty much next door, and often come and say hello! I actually save the shells and give them back to the farmer to re-feed back to the birds as this is great for their diet, and makes for the toughest eggs laid...you can't crack them with one hand!! OK, meat is a bit more difficult....I'm one of those people who can't even look a rainbow trout in the eye before I eat it, never mind eye up a cow or pigs rump! But I buy from farms that i know care well for their animals, who have their own butcher and farmshop, and breathe the same fresh air as me daily! (The animals and the butcher's that is!) And before I lived in an area with farms next door, I simply researched and bought in bulk whenever and wherever I could. We frequently went on weekends away with a big coolbox to go raiding the local farm shops! |

As you can see from my avatar,i HATE any sort of animal abuse...i know i eat them ,but they still deserve a good live. |

Please dont let this thread degenerate into a personal attack. We must all respect other peoples views on issues like this.
I watched the Chicken Run programme and listened to one lady who would not be swayed, but she could still afford to have her nails done - but then who am I to dictate to anyone what their financial priorities should be. |
