I'm new to this, that is this site and nails. I have had acrylic nails myself for years. Following my friend getting a fungal infection from the dreaded saigon nails, yes I can imagine you are all cringing! I decided to soak them off, long job. I then had a look around on the web and decided to go for Bio Sculpture. I have now decided I would like to learn how to do this myself.

My question is about the course you have to go on to become qualified. As I have no manicure certification it means starting from scratch. There isn't a course starting until Feb '10 too long to wait, so I thought I might do a manicure course at college, which means I only have to do the gel training with them. The kit I've been told comes in with the price of the course around £550 which includes the UV lamp. Do I need this lamp off them or could I look for a different one that might be slightly cheaper? Is this a good system to go with. I've had my nails done, and I'm not happy with them really. There are steps at the end off my nails they feel a bit like a runway when I run my fingers down them, I did go back and she buffed them down a bit. Don't think I'll be going back there for the infills!

Any help greatly appreciated.

I am a straight man 65 in the USA. My wife is a musician who gets nail extensions when touring. I ike them and often ask her to get hem for vacations or special occasions. Once when I asked her she said, "OK. You wear glue-on nails for the weekend and I will do it." She put hem on me, but after a couple of hours they hurt, I broke them with everything I tried to do, and had a bad experience. She won.

I went through the same drill last week. "You want me to wear gel nails, then you get them and we'll see."

I did it. The are great. Feel no different that my bare fingers. Half inch white tips and all. No hurt, won't break, look great. I have had them on for 5 days now and no change. I asked her if I had to take them off at the end of the week. I like them. I may keep them for awhile. Nobody has ever said anything at the McDonalds, or Walmart, or the restaurant.

More guys should try this.

Hi all!
Sorry, not sure if I've put this in the right place or not.
I'm currently doing Level 2 NVQ in Beauty Therapy and have just got my Lifetime VTCT Registration from my tutor who said it also acts as my student card. However, I have tried to buy a few things from Ellisons, Sallys and a few other places but I can't find a way of putting my number in to get the discount, does this mean I can only buy over the phone or go instore?
If anyone can help, I'd be grateful.
Sorry if it sounds a bit thick, most probably doing something wrong!

Nails Can you identify this nail abnormality, please?

Hello. Middle-aged male, never had any problems with my fingernails until the past year or so, when this abnormality appeared on the nail of my little finger, left hand.

You know where the skin of the finger meets the cuticle area and then folds back on itself and heads back towards the nail bed, well the problem seems to be under there, about 2 or 3mm below the cuticle line - it seems that the skin is attaching itself to the nail at that point, and then being dragged along as the nail grows.

When this thing appears, I use a steel nail tool and dig gently under there, lifting that abnormal skin growth from the nail, but then it reattaches and so two or three weeks later it appears again, so I have to 'treat' it again. I know I'm not supposed to dig underneath there but it becomes painful if allowed to grow too far, and I do sterilise the steel tool before I use it. I've allowed this to grow for about five weeks, so that I could get a decent photo of it.

So, does anybody know if this has a name, and how it should be treated - self-treatment, treatment by a nail technician, or should I speak to my doctor about it? Thanks.
