How to win friends

With the new Social Networking abilities at Salon Geek, many are wondering how they too can look cool and popular while online by maxing out thier friends list in no time flat.

Making friends is simple...

Step 1: Befriend a geek

View the members profile that you wish to make a friend. You can do this by searching in the memberlist as well as clicking their name in a post. You can also simply add their name to your contact list - but we will get to that in a second.

When viewing the geeks profile, click the link in their friends box that says 'befriend' (for example: The Geek's profile).

The next screen confirms that you want to add the user to your contacts and asks if you want to send a friend request notification to the user. Once you click OK, the user is not your friend, but a contact. A contact is a one-sided friendship meaning that you have added them to your friends list, but you are not yet on theirs. Once your new found friend accepts your friendship request, you will show up on each others friend lists.

Step 2: Accept request

When you have a new friendship request, your notifications menu will alert you. Simply click the notification and select incoming friendship requests

You can also easily accept notfications of new friendship requests, edit your current friendlist or mass-add friends by going to your profile and clicking edit your friends list.

Step 3: Cement new friendship

Scroll to the bottom of the page to view your friendship requests. Select the users you wish to befriend and click save changes.

Neat. I don't do facebook or anything, so I don't really get what the advantage to being someone's 'friend' is? Being popular?

WOW
I feel popular all of a sudden.
All these emails telling me people want to be my friend
I'm sitting here going "Huh? what's this new friend's thing on geek?"

I'm VERY flattered and there's a tonne of you I want to add too.
I guess I better get to work
LOL

it's cool, but it makes me feel like a "try hard", Ive never felt the need to solidify a friendship by "asking for their hand" (or approval) in friendship.

I'd like to think we are all friends without approval, or asking on bended knee.

Heaven forbid, I may be rejected .

Will I think less of a person if they don't ask me, will they think less of me if I don't ask them ? What a quandry, it's like speed dating.

I see it as nothing more than a new fun toy....eventually i think we could all end up on everyones list...

And when me mate Amber gets round to accepting my offer...i might just kick her off again for taking to long....PMSL

i havent been on here much due to chrissy, its amazing how much things have changed, but i think regular change is always good, it keeps things fresh and interesting. i promise i wont say no to any requests for friends, i dont think anyone would say no to a request?? u would have to be a right cow, wouldnt u, or a right bull (male cow) LOL
Now i just have to find the time to work it all out.

I'm loving it, having come in to a couple messages after a week away I was just thinking I might end up a Johnny no mates when I spotted some requests. I'm feeling all warm and fuzzy now Am wondering how my old brain will cope trying to remember who I 'invited'. Have horrible feeling I asked someone twice!

Maybe they feel like they 'know' you from posts that they read. If I'm reading a thread and I see someone who is not a friend, I often ask them. I've had requests from geeks unfamiliar to me - just thought they were being 'friendly'.

Bit like the myspace/face book which if like me your addicted to those things its nothing new, would be good if like those you could select your top ones. but I guess thats soon to come, baby steps.

Nice little touch Its always good to have a change in my book and it just shows how much the site has evolved from when I joined, wouldn't mind the molians back then I could save up and change bits

Couple of questions please.
1. I still can't see my Facebook symbol or anyone else's. What does it look like?
2. I don't like the way that if you read someones profile, it tells them. Can we cahnge that?

Thanks
