Tagging is a popular way to attach relevant keywords to threads. It helps users find relevant threads much easier than by just using the search facilities.
Tagging is simple - and it's fun! So I thought I would jot down a quick introduction to tagging here at Salon Geek.
Whenever you start a new thread, you will be given the option to attach up to 5 tags to the thread. You can attach any tags you want (regardless of whether they exist already or not) however it is often a good idea to try and pick keywords that are relevant and useful.
For example, in a thread where you are asking about problems with lifting when applying a new set of Liquid and powder enhancements, good tags would be: lifting, L&P. Bad keywords would be: Frank, cheese, nails.
The first two bad examples are pretty obvious but why would nails be bad? Because it is far too common of a keyword. Since 90% of the threads in The Nail Geek forum will be about nails, why tag it?!?
So, now that you have your tags, where do you put them? Simply look for the box below your new thread post that says (oddly enough) tags.
As you start to type in the tags, a drop down list will appear with tags that have already been entered that are similar to yours (if no pop up appears, then rest assured a tag has not been created like the one you are entering yet!). If the pop up appears and is a good tag for your thread, you can click on it to have enter into the box.
You can also enter multiple tags in this box by separating each one with a comma.
Every half an hour or so, the system compiles all tags and their popularity and updates the sites tag cloud. A tag cloud is a list of the more popularly used tags on the site. It is called a cloud because some words are bigger than others giving it the 'impression' of a 'cloud' (wow). Clicking on any of these tags will bring up a list of threads that have been tagged with the keyword you selected.
You can also add tags to existing threads by scrolling to the bottom of a thread and selecting the edit icon in the tag list.
Use the tags wisely and they will be your friend remember that moderators can see who entered tags.
