My mum used to rub cooking oil into her nails!!! She swore by it and she did have the strongest, longest most beautiful nails. Presumably this is the forerunner of all cuticle oils but without a nice smell!

Coming from a large Irish family we were always chit chatting together about anything and everything and anyone who came into the room could usually join in, but If we ever walked in on my nana having a private converstion with someone and asked her what they were talking about she would say "i was just saying that there is £50 in the Bank of Ireland for anyone who can mind there own business and you've just lost out on your chance to collect it!"

we still use it with eachother now, although whilst i used to mutter an apology to my nana I tend to get a different response from my brothers if i say it to them !!

The only one other than those already posted was a favourite of my Nan's and that was "I want never gets". It taught me to ask for things nicely rather than a demand.

Blimey my mum did this too - get my own back now though when she says, I want!!

My Mum used to say

"Never let the Left hand know what the Right hands doing!"

That'd be a bit tricky in my job!!! I wouldn't have many clients left!!

I never understood what the hell she meant until i got married - she meant don't always tell your hubby everything. I have to say my hubby & I are much more of a team than my parents were! Even tho they stacked up 44yrs of marriage - so it must of worked for her!! Bless her.

Oh my, I thought my Mother was the only one who would say such a frightening thing to a child but it sure stopped me too & the funniest thing is, she doesn't even remember saying it! Nor does she believe it had such a powerful impact on me

I was always told to never kill spiders. Spiders are moneyspinners so if you kill a spider, you kill the money in your house. I have never deliberately killed a spider and I'm still sodding poor!!!!

My mum always says never to trust someone who doesnt drink tea or coffee- it's just not normal !!!
I have met some lovely people who dont drink tea or coffee so dont take offense if you dont lol
