I like the term 'Nail Artist' nails are not just a beauty thing they are a true way of expression and fashion, like hair styles and colours people can show their personalities through their chosen styles and designs and change these in line with current trends.

Technician relates more to a 'useful' art or science type term. I'm not a real fan of it but at least it reflects a measure of respect for the art, which it is. I prefer stylist because it brings to mind the art/creative side to nails as well as the sense of 'professionalism', as with a hair stylist. That's why hairdressers prefer 'hair stylist', I guess. There has been so much growth in these industries in the last decade, they probably deserve better recognition and respect for the level of training, time and skill most people put into it. It does have a bit of a copy cat feel though, with hair stylist but the only other suggestion I can pull up right now is 'nail creator'. Don't know if it has a professional enough ring to it though. I'd like to see a change in name that would set the 'boutique' tech's (with the proper training, products and skill), apart from the 'nail factory lines'.

I am happy being referred to as a nail technician, so long as clients keep coming to me. The general public are just getting to know what a nail technician is so I would be reluctant to change the title in case it caused confusion to potential clients.

I like the sound of nail stylist and particularly Nail Artist, but I am sticking with good old Nail technician as it does sound professional and clients are used to it.

OH Bugger!!!
I`ve been calling myself a Nail Artist for the past 12 months - and about 3 days ago decided to change my business cards to Nail Technician - because I thought that "artist" made me sound like I just painted nails - rather than offer the full service. Guess I`ll have to stick with Nail Tech now till me cards run out. Ney mind eh? |

Nail Stylist or Artist sounds wonderful, however in the area I work I don't think it's an appropriate title it could only confuse my clientele. If I practiced my profession within the thriving cosmopolitan city then I would change. So for now I remain a Professional Nail Technician.
