PN May chatroom - Please call me... -
21-03-06, 01:45 PM
Hello geeks...
Well, how cool is it for 'the media' to get its own little section... feel very important now! Anyway, as usual, I'm doing my regular post to ask for your comments and thoughts for the chatroom piece appearing in the May issue of Professional Nails. I read with great interest the thread on how 'nail stylist' is becoming a more favoured term for describing finger fashionisitas everywhere, and wanted to continue the debate in the mag. So, this month's question is... In this the 21st century, what do you want to your title to be and why? As always, if you want your comments appearing in the mag, please include your full, real name and name of your business so that I can credit you properly. Feel free to PM me or email kathrynh@tradesexhibitions.com if you'd prefer. Thanks all and looking forward to hearing from you! Cheers Kat xxx Editor Professional Nails |

i changed my name from nail technician to nail stylist a few days ago when i changed my trading name as when i thought about it do you get a hair cut by a hair technician, or a facial from a beauty technician, the term technician makes you sound like a mechienist, or mechanic,
i feel stylist is more fitting as we style the nails and give them style and personality, we can style a work of art, we make the style fit the client hope i have made sence tracy miss pink mobile nail stylist colchester |

it is a difficult one to descide which label, technician/stylists/artisans, i class myself as.
technician could be understood to mean technical which is what we learn to do, understanding the technical and chemistry side of the nail industry and products we use. and to create a good structual enhancement stylist - to style the nails to suit the client, to use nails like clothes to determine a persons style, to determine what styles suit whom and what styles are in vogue at the moment artisan- the artistic flair and eye to create a good set of enhancements which suit and look pleasing to the eye. another name springs to mind..nail enhancer....enhancing the natural nail to create a good strong and beautiful enhancement, wheither it be extending or enhancing... when people ask what i do...i say i am a nail technician and havent given it alot of thought up until now as to class myself as anything else. maybe i will change my mind.... joanne rowsell nails by jo southport merseyside |

Its really difficult to decide as I don't want to confuse my potential clients by giving myself a name that they are not familiar with.
I am sticking to Nail Technician for now but I have to say I love the sound of Nail Stylist & also Nail Therapist. Shelley Lee Nails & Beauty By Shelley |

i, like most others call myself a nail technician, but i would love a title that describes what we do a little better. in the salon we call those who used to be beauticians, beauty therapists, and those we used to call hairdessers, are now stylists or colour technicians, i think we should be more than nail technicians, because we are......we are artists, we are therapists, and we are stylists all rolled into one. As far as what we do call ourselves, i don't know, but at this time, when we are trying so hard to educate our clients about proper care and maintenance of their nails, i think we do need a title that better reflects what we do.

I love Nail Stylist. That's fab.
Last week I changed from 'Mobile Nail Tech' to 'Freelance Nail Artist'. I wanted to stand out from all the other mobile nail techs and I wanted something that was professional and suggested creativity too. Now I just have to raise my confidence to that the level that a freelance nail artist should have! My standards are staying as high as ever. Pix |

well, i have always described myself as a NAIL TEK in the past, i've just promoted myself to a NAIL STYLIST
When i see my clients each time, we have a lengthy discussion on the look they want to acheive, french, colour, custom blending, or just simply natural. Now that i am able to offer 'more choice' i do consider myself a 'nailstylist' ...yep i like that one its going to stick now thanks! Love it AMB |

I refer to myself as a nail stylist,
its not just about the nails its about how it works with the lifestyle, the function they may be attending and the clothes they wear to go with it all. we have to keep on top of what is fashionable in clothes styles and colours as does any other person in the fashion and beauty world, what shape are they wearing on the catwalks and what colours were they being painted. I go with whatever works for the clients!! Although funnily enough, I was chatting with some people the other day on this subject...one is a 'technician' in a quite expensive and up market hair salon, and she tells me they have just got rid of the title of hair-stylist for everyone there now, as it is giving an impression of being too junior to their clients!
They have Colour, Style or Salon Directors....hmm...Nail Director...does it work?? Lyndsay Harrold Tough as Nails |

I'm still calling myself a technician. I don't think most of my oldies even know that's what I am. To them I'm the nail lady! If I'm mobile and they have a friend round I am even more important - "You'll have to go now Edna MY nail lady is here". I've been called worse things.....
